Well, now I've done it! I gave my 30 days notice to vacate my apartment. Now I'm committed! The count down timer begins!

I had been thinking about doing this for the past couple months, but distractions got in the way. I had been prepping and modifying my van for over 2 years, and it's finally done and is about as comfortable as I can make it.

The thing that made it harder for me to make the decision to leave my apartment is that it would be difficult for me to get another apartment for the same current monthly rate, which is lower than the current market because I've been there for past several years. That's why I know once I make the commitment to do this full time, I'm going to be doing this for an indefinite amount of time, which means aaaaawwwwhile short of a big pay increase or winning the lottery.

As soon as I leave my current apartment, I know the landlord will jack up the monthly rate by several hundred dollars easily. Honestly, I'm having a hard time even keeping up with the current (lower) rate without slowing getting myself deeper in the hole every month. I used to make decent amount of income, but lately it's been on the decline.

At the least, I will pretty much stay close to the neighborhood which I'm used to. Only major hassle is having to move and park the vehicle regularly, as in every day. Oh well, at this point, I'd rather move the vehicle every day than paying rent. I'll be doing the urban boondocking thing, if that's the right terminology. I won't be leaving city life any time soon. I prefer the city versus being in the boonies.

I already renewed my gym membership so that I'll have a place to shower and clean up. Actually, I'll be signing up for 2 different gyms. One gym is nearby my neighborhood for easy access. The other gym is a chain so I can visit a gym most anywhere. It's also important that I have a gym in different locations that's open 24 hours everyday, which makes things easier.

Although I have plenty of stoves and cooking supplies, I pretty much won't be cooking in my van. I'll be eating outside pretty much all the time. Yes, I know that gets expensive, but I have lots of choices that are relatively low cost. I won't be going to McDonalds or other fast food places, by the way, haha!

About the only thing I will "cook" in the van is boiling water for coffee or tea, haha! Maybe the only other thing I'll cook is Chunky soup in a can (or Progresso soup), which I really like. It's easy and filling, especially for a quick snack. I have a butane stove that's very portable and compact, plus a very small pot large enough for the content of a soup can.

As for places to simply hang out before going "home to the van" at night, I have plenty of choices, such as the park, the mall, libraries, downtown shops, etc. I don't really like going directly from work to the van, mostly cuz I'd be bored probably. Plus my van has limited space so I start to feel "closed in" and constrained if I stay inside too long. Hence I'd rather be outside and about among people.

I've already created a spreadsheet of what I'll be saving by not paying monthly rent. In one year's time, I will have saved over $14,000 by not paying rent to the landlord. Instead, I will deposit that amount into my savings. It's important for me to replenish my savings because over the past several years, I had been laid off my jobs a few times and used up too much savings.

I'm also at a point in my life that I'm realizing if I had to rely soley on social security income on retirement, that amount won't be enough to even pay monthly rent, let alone paying for anything else. That in fact does worry me about the future. Rent keeps increasing, including cost of living for everything. So finding a method to adapt to this eventuality is important.

I sometimes wish I had something like a RoadTrek that is fully self contained, plus is tall enough to stand up. But for now, I'm content with my modified conversion van. Maybe one day if I have enough funds saved up in the future, I might splurge for a RoadTrek 170 van. I can always dream, haha!

Additionally, I had been dating someone I met recently. This too made it more challenging for me to make a decision to leave my apartment. What if she thinks I've gone bonkers?! That was something I wondered about, even worried about a bit. But in the end, I decided I need to do what is right for me despite whatever outcome or residual collateral effect might occur.

Lastly, it was a good thing I went to the recent RTR Quartzsite event. That gave me a chance to see that others are already doing the same thing. All those peeps at RTR seemed normal to me. :) I'm encouraged that others before me already had the courage to do this full time. Now it's my turn!

Well, that's about enough for now. These are the thoughts going through my mind at this current time. It's pretty much impossible to share these same thoughts with anyone else in my circles, cuz they simply wouldn't understand. Hence I'm sharing these thoughts with you guys here on this forum. :)

once you make the move , you will find ways to improve on what your doing if its for you!

I had no choice when I came out here, did the car thing then the van ....everytime I went back to "Normal living" I just wanted to get back out here....more opportunities and less stress to make the move. when I became disabled the world closed in again took what I had left and bought an old class b Van and journeyed off.....your right your SSI wont do so well.....I get 900 a month , you break that down into day to day living thats roughly 25 dollars a day for everything.....I had to find a way to add funds in a hurry!!

Congratulations Casey! Keep us updated. There aren't a lot of urban van dwellers on the forums so your input will be valuable.

Way to go, Casey !! Good Luck, You know we're all behind you on this!!

Wow, you've sure had your share of bad breaks. Glad to hear you've been able to adapt! When I finally reach retirement age, the SS calculator says I'll get something around $1300 monthly, or more due to cost of living increases. Whatever the final amount will be, it will probably be chump change enough for coffee and donuts by the time I finally get there! :dodgy: I once saw a funny cartoon whereby the middle age husband says to his wife, I think I've finally figured out the answer on how to retire for the both of us. We just need to both work longer and die earlier! Haha! :p

Thank you, appreciate it! Really, there aren't many urban van dwellers on this forum? You're probably right. I'll say this for certainty, it's sure very different camping in the desert of Quartzsite Arizona versus a large metropolitan city! Haha! :D In the desert, you can roll out your awning and lounge chairs, fire up the generator, light up the BBQ grill, make a campfire, etc. In the city, you can't do ANY of those things! :s Or at least, it would be in-advisable to do so. Although I'm no veteran at this lifestyle, I've been "camping out" at various cities and urban environments off and on for the past 2 years. So I actually feel rather confident that I can do this. For the most part, I know what to do, and more importantly, what not to do in urban environments to keep out of trouble.

EDIT:
Lately I've been trying to live by the New Hampsire license plate motto of "Live Free or Die"!! I really like that motto. I even have souvenir license plates and decals in my van with that motto of Live Free or Die. Keeps me focused!! Anyone that tries to limit my freedom is like voodoo to me. That's what my van represents to me, freedom. Or at least more freedom than before I had the van. I'm really getting tired of the rat race. I have the "I don't give a d@mn one iota more than I have to" attitude about things nowadays. I'm hoping to travel more with my van, and to meet more people too. Heck, I even want to start a blog about it, haha!

I moved out of my house last month. I got my deposit back last night. I completely forgot I had it coming to me. When I stopped and thought about it, and realized that my priorities in life have shifted to where money is no longer that important; IT FELT GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Casey!!

You've been a resident on this forum long enough to know what works and what doesn't, plus you've been working on putting your own show together for so long that you're starting out WAYYYYYYY ahead of the pack! If anyone is prepared....it's YOU!

All the best to ya 'old boy!! :D

btw....what city are you in??

Casey, we wish you all the best.
Have to agree with Patrick...you should be well ahead of most in the game.
Now, if you can preform your job remotely, it will open lots of roads.
Of course its just me, but I'd wanna get the hell out of the Bay Area.

Take care, buddy.

Thanks for the encouragement guys! I'm currently clearing out my place which is a chore that's wearing me out. Every time I need to move out of a place, I get uptight with myself on all the stuff I bought and now trying to figure out what to do with the stuff. I'm mostly done so that's a relief. I have til the end of the month to move out.

Update here for anyone interested. Yes, I actually did it. Left the apartment for good last Friday. I was still clearing out my stuff up til the last day. Worse, I was scrubbing the bathroom tiles like a son-of-a-gun for hours and my shoulders and back were sore from cleaning for hours and hours. Mental note to self: next time hire a freakin' cleaning lady if I should ever encounter a similar scenario! Last thing I did was gave the keys back to the landlord.

Then it was off to my favorite campsite for the past weekend. Took the old, now current again, GF along with me. We ended up shopping for her most of the weekend at the discount outlet stores. Camping was only incidental, haha! Never mind cooking at the campsite, we ate out at the nicest restaurant I could find and had steak every night as my reward for actually having the balls to bug out of my apartment. It really took a bit of courage, more than I imagined, to actually leave the apartment and do the van dwelling thing full time.

Last night I implemented my urban stealth boondocking plan, which went off without a hitch. After dinner, and past sundown, I found a nice quiet safe parking spot. Even got a pretty decent night sleep too! Got up early morning before sunrise, parked at a different spot, went to my favorite gym to wash up, then went to work. It all felt pretty normal to me actually. Just as I had planned it in my mind's eye many times over. Yes, it's going to take awhile longer for me to get used to this new "schedule". But so far, it all worked out according to my plan.

I'm a happy camper. Hope to have at least $15k saved up a year's time from now from not having to pay rent. That will be another update!

congratulations, what did you do with your beamer, maybe I should be reading the rest of this post....

Thank you! Still have the Bimmer. Use that for running errands and "regular" driving, whatever that means! :D

Congrats Casey.
Nice having the GF around, I'm sure, but hope you get some actual camping time in with her...without the stores and restaurants :p

Glad things are working and that it feels right.
Keep us posted.

Didn't you know???....His van has a garage :D:D:D:D::D

Hi Jay!

Thanks bud! You're right, my idea of camping is a bastardized version of it that's far removed from standard definitions, haha! But as I mentioned in other previous threads...I don't like cleaning! I'll keep ya posted again.

By the way, on the way back home from "camping", the GF and I checked out an RV shop. I had been wanting to check out a RoadTrek 170 model in person for the past couple years, but was never able to do so as only the 190 models were in stock. Well by chance, a brand new 2014 RoadTrek 170 Versatile was in stock, and we both checked out the interior pretty thoroughly. I was in lust! The kind of lust any 17 year old boy would be over a cute redhead in school. Well, almost, not quite! But even more surprising was that the GF was almost equally intrigued by the RoadTrek 170. She liked the kitchen and restroom space, and the fact we can stand upright. We both were able to fit horizontally in the back of the fold down bench seat bed. For me it was just barely with maybe an inch to spare of headroom space, for her it was no problem. We looked (gasped) at the price tag. For only $93k out the door, we could drive it away! Well, in my dreams at least. Maybe if I save enough, one day it might be possible. Sigh...

One day a couple years from now it will sell for a quarter that :)

It will lose $10,000.00 per year for the first 5 years I bet!
