Yea I looked at the brackets and that's was I was thinking, grind off the tire bracket portion of a rear door tire carrier and then weld weld one of those 20 L carriers flat up against it.

No access to my mig anyway so doesn't matter right at this point anyway.

Thanks.

if it were me I would build a new rear bumper and put a swing out carrier on it, then mount the cans and tire to that. I know that is beyond the capability of most but that's what I would do. highdesertranger

I have two 5Gal can carriers I got from Pep Boys years ago.  They easily bolt to a surface.  So bolting to a spare tire unit would be easy.  They have slots for straps but I made the straps myself.  Steel bands with tabs for a pad lock give better security.
I don't have those on either van now, as I used them on my 4X4 Dodge Ramcharger before it died.
You might check out Jeep/offroading vendors, as there are a wide variety of gas can carriers available.  The RotaPacs are a very interesting idea (often used on small ATVs and some offroad motorcycles.  They can be gotten in smaller capacities.  Lighter weight.  They ain't cheap though!

I have a yellow Scepter can I bought when you still could. I also have 2 yellow Waco Nato style cans I bought before they went the CARB route. I like the Scepter better - it just seems to pour easier and faster. My truck is diesel so in theory yellow is the correct color, but as HDR noted - not everyone uses the same color code. I also recently bought a tan Scepter water container - you can still buy those. Interestingly molded right into it is "Property of US Government". I bought it from a legitimate vender brand new. I wonder if I take my Scepter cans on a trip across the Canadian border if I'll be able to bring them back? I've heard of others having issues.
In my truck I have a carrier built by AT Trailers. Really nice carrier, but expensive.

I don't think you will have an issue. the old style cans are still legal to use, they just can't be sold new. highdesertranger
