I had Magellan.. and was thoroughly disappointed. The BIG deal for me was their using a proprietary map format, which meant that no custom/3rd party maps could be loaded (many for free). Garmin, on the other hand, is a pleasure to use. I've downloaded the entire Canadian Gov. topo map database and have whatever I need loaded on my Garmin GPS's.. for FREE!!! ..Willy.

I have a 2 garmins .... an older model (2000 I think) and then a new one.. I also carry an atlas... because I have found that my GPS likes to take pig trails when I want a more direct route..but if you are just roaming .... pig trails can be fun and interesting.

Garmin is the most user friendly for the non tech savvy I think... I have a friend that is directionally and technology challenged. She had a TomTom but still kept getting lost on the way to her fireworks stand. I kept asking her why she didn't use her GPS. After messing with her tomtom ...I knew. Needless to say we went and found her a garmin and she has not been lost since.

and as Willy said I think they have to most options for custom maps... I know on the garmin site they also have custom POI's too.
