Is it legal to remove the front passenger seat entirely? I want to use that space more effectively and I have no interest in taking passengers.

Might depend on where you are, but a lot of delivery vans such as UPS and wossname, FEDEX don't have passenger seats. I'm guessing there's no legal requirement for one.

Mine doesn't have a passenger seat and I've had more deputies stick their nose in my van than you can shake a stick at.

I don't understand why removing the front passenger seat is a issue. What I do with my van is my business. I'm considering either one of two options when I buy my van:

(1) Reverse my passenger seat
(2) Removing my passenger seat entirely

I'm prefer number 2 as I want to maximize what space I have to use in my van. I may want to put some type of litterbox for my cats in place of the passenger seat. It will be an "enclosed" littlebox so that will fit perfect where the passenger seat was located.

I may reverse the passenger seat but I doubt I'd do that unless I could relocate the cat(s) litterbox to a different location.

As to the LEO's poking their heads into my van, that might get me somewhat concerned as to their intent for this invasive curiosity in my lack of a passenger seat.

Interesting!

@Pikachu711, I just want to make sure and I figured I might get some real-world advice here. I agree with you; It's my property and I can do whatever I like with it.

My plan is to make the front passenger area my battery bank and inverter area with easy access to the batteries from the passenger side. I'll box them and use the box as a tray/table for my laptop, or whatever. I have many interesting ideas.

dfunct: I'd never considered removing the passenger seat until you made your post. But once I got thinking about it, went out and thought it over while looking, I think I might just do it myself. Lots of wasted space that seat occupies.

Gracias,

My original question referred to legality of this modification, but there is also another consideration; if I am visiting a friend and we go into town or out for a side trip, I will always be relying on my buddies to drive since I won't be able to take a passenger. Although this is a small concern, it does speak to my selfishness. As long as that is not a problem I can see only benefits from this idea.

Definitely a consideration. Thanks for pointing it out. My potential passengers are mostly all dead these days, but it's possible others will come along, the Coincidence Coordinators being the communists they're prone to be.

My mention of the law in this post is in reference to the fact that I work out of my van. Because I work along so many state and federal highways I always notify the local law in the area where I am and much of the time they will eventually stop by and visit. My van always comes up in the conversation because of it's peculiar nature. (It's a 1975 chevy hi top that is cream/orange/brown in color) Many of them have poked there head inside and seen the lack of a passenger seat because I actually carry files where the seat would be.
Some of them ask where I park when I'm not working and I tell them if I know. The other day one of them said if I decide to use one of the local county campgrounds to call the local sheriffs office and let them know; otherwise I would stand the chance of being awakened in the night. Because it is in the off season up north they are not manned. I did that and was never bothered although I heard, what I assumed to be, them in the middle of the night a couple times. I was in the area for close to 3 weeks with no issues.

If the room allows it, can a swivel base be placed in any van? Do you have to purchase a base or seat specific to the van or are they more generic? A swivel is what I would prefer.

Rae

yesican: I'm sure that they do have swivel bases that will fit in a majority of vehicle seats. It just takes finding the right one. Or if it's not a perfect fit maybe a little "tweaking" to get the mounted so it works for you.

They make swivels for most vans

Googled these ones up a while back
http://www.discountvantruck.com/rvvanseatbases/rvvanseatbases.htm

They seem kinda pricey. I wonder if you could make your own...

What i need to find out is if a plymouth voyager minivan seat can be stuck in a 10 year older chevy g10 Man my seats suck bad in the cargo van.

I've pulled the front passenger seat on more than one vehicle (and you might be able to get some money for it on eBay depending) and never had any problem (even when pulled over). Only caveat here is that you don't want to pull it and then have someone sitting in the space. With seatbelt laws you will get pulled over and ticketed.
