So I am still evaluating food storage aka fridge/freezers.

I have the money to spend up to about $900 but do I want to?

I know all the best brands but I'm still leaning towards the Edgestar FP430. It's $460 and $30 for the 4 year protection plan. This seems like a decent cost/value.

But I'd love to hear other peoples thoughts on the subject and amazon warranty/square trade protection plan experience.  It's not a small purchase so any input is greatly appreciated.

I was considering buying a Whynter and a protection plan, but... Do you have to pay to mail a large, heavy and somewhat delicate refrigerator back if you have a protection plan? If you have multiple failures, how many times might you have to send it? I tried to find out, failed to get an answer, and therefore have put off my purchase until I learn more.

looks like the policy is limited to item value. So if one fix exceeds the value/price of unit it'd be done. It'll be good for one replacement or if multiple repairs add up to value..something like that. So I'd count on it being one refund or replacement after mfgr warranty expires within "X" number of years.

ARB and some others that open sideways really can limit build design...or my design anyways so needing the traditional chest opening position kinda has my options limited a little.

I want to mount under countertop where a section of the countertop lifts to expose the fridge top. Extra insulation would be built into the underside of the counter to act as additional fridge lid insulation. Yes, I like complicated, lol

Actually heat enters the box from below most of all, downwards hardly at all.

Ideally when running the condenser and electronics are in a well-defined side or corner - increase ventilation there.

Otherwise insulate, focus on the bottom and sides much more than on top.

Assuming the lid seals well of course

that's in the plan as well, was mostly just describing my reasoning for limiting myself to a specific lid configuration.

I have a Truckfridge tf130. Hubby's got an Indel B Cruise 130 (4.6 cu ft with tiny freezer-good for ice cubes or Klondikes). Same manufacturer as Isotherm and Vitrifrigo. I have a gas/AC fridge in the trailer, but I use my truckfridge for back up. Got it filled with stuff like yogurt and milk and other stuff that won't fit into the trailer fridge. That way I can go weeks without shopping.

We're very happy with the fridges. It was almost 100F here today and inside the van much warmer. The fridge has stayed between 33F AND 35F in the last 24 hours and that was with putting a room temperature bottle of wine in it this morning. I have 2 Inc hes of insulation on all sides but the door, even the floor.

I got mine through Amazon. Hubby got his through a marine vendor.

indel (truckfridge, vitrifrigo, isotherm) are all owned by Webasto!

The cheaper units made in China, pricey ones (for now still) in Italy

Between that lot and Waeco / Dometic, not too many others are independent.

I got the lower end Dometic, the CC-40 (as opposed to the CFX-40). I use it as a freezer and a cooler as a refrigerator - I rotate my ice jugs through the freezer. It is a bit underpowered, but it meets my value needs. I paid around $335 from Dyers.

I've run my ARB 47 qt compressor fridge for 3 years and it performs like new.  Less than 2 amps electrical draw for a few minutes each hour.  When it's 105 outside, the fridge keeps a steady 38 degress inside. I hardly notice a change in my solar array's charging cycles.

I'm going to buy another ARB for my step van this year.
