Ok, here's what the DMV said:

Husband:
- Sign his name as seller on back of "by executor"
- Copy of the letter of testamentary - notary seal
- Bill of sale OR just amount (seller price) on back of title
- No death certificate if went through probate

I called the seller, I'm not entirely sure he understood the importance of what I was saying, but he said he might have it somewhere. He doesn't text or email, so the chances of him being able to operate a photocopier are minimal. I guess I'll have to plan to escort him to the DMV on Tuesday morning at the worst case.

that would be your best bet, because the alternative would be a HUGE problem

AAA is the way to go. I have Plus and if you can make it at least 98 miles, you can get it towed back home if something happens :)

If a smartphone is handy you could take a picture of the title front and back.  Surely there is someone near him who could do this for him and send the pictures to you so you could show them to the DMV before you make the trip.

He's not a smart man with technology, he had his sister put the CL ad up and respond to emails, but now she's back to work in another state (she was only visiting for the weekend). The DMV assured me it would be fine with the power of attorney copy. We're heading out in about 35 minutes, so I'm just going to have to hope he has the right documents, or this could be a very wasteful use of 8 hours...!

Folks, this is just a friendly reminder that many of us have limited bandwidth so we ask that you carefully trim any quotes you include to the bare minimum. When you are reading on a phone, and you have to read the same post twice to get a new comment, it can be frustrating--especially if there are pictures!

It's not necessary to use the quote or reply button. Scroll to the bottom of the page and use the quick reply box. Copy and paste the relevant information.

If you're replying to the original post, or the post above, it's not necessary to quote at all.

You can respond without quoting by using a member's name, arrows (^^^) to indicate a post above

Definitely do not quote or reply to your own posts

If you do feel the need to quote remove pictures from your quote

Be kind and trim!! Smile

"Jeez, this waz a nice, clear issue before all yuz furm guys and gals made it complikateed..."

Good thing the OP asked and gave the details, you've alerted them (him/her) to lots of things to consider.  ;)

Personally I like option 1 of the friend and their pickup while also buying a battery.  OP please let us know how it all went and if you got back safely!

Yeah for the forum!  Everybody give the other posters a pat on the back!

I got her, I'm safe, the title is signed, everything is beautiful, I'm one happy vancamper!

I've done a few "Insane vehicle recovery missions" with friends in the past. Be prepared for stuff to go ALL WONKY. Having an AAA card helps. I didn't have that back then. Only my wits and a few wrenches... ::)

The most memorable of these "Missions"... 600 mile trek home in a giant 4x4 chevy van with 2 dead cylinders, a bad master cylinder, and nothing but a backback of tools, some left over tampons I found in the back of the van, powerbars, and a few lines of speed. (speed. Its fun when your 19)

Maaaan... you didn't mention the van was that gorgeous!
Congrats!!!

I was scared of jinxing it! She's red, white, and tufted all over. Had no problems on the 200 mile return journey and handled 75 mph admirably (but much preferred 55!). The seatbelts need fixing up, the rear door wouldn't lock (currently zip tied closed) and the steering pulls to the left sightly, but I'm amazed by her condition. Love love love. Today was a good day :)
