Do you mean like:

Since you are a mini van moto man rather than a real size van moto man you are not a real man as size does matter.  Therefore your idea that debate could be intelectual is poop and ideas should be quashed not discussed.

As opposed to:

Any argument about skillful stimulation and mastery of debate techniques would be argument about the topic at hand rather than an attack against a person.  It could be interesting and enlightening.

By the way, I have a mini van.  I think it is the right size for me even though at 220 pounds I am full sized.

@ Trebor
Am just a mini Moto van man.
Or is that mini man Moto van.
Maybe it's man van Moto mini.
All of a sudden I'm confused as to what I am?
Thx for projecting an identity crisis on to me.
Ad hominem, isn't that some type of bean dip?

That's a terrible suggestion.  If we simply find "mindless" people to argue with, we'll never hone our intellectual acumen.

And, if we never hone our acumen we will never become master debaters.

The trick is to learn how to tell which arguments are fostered by empty straw men, and then point this out when you see it. It's not hard to do. As pointed out, straw men point in one direction while they are really arguing in a different direction.

Oops, my fight a straw man comment was dripping with sarcasm, my weapon of choice.
Was meant to be humorous, not serious and reflected in the tone of the entire message I thought.
My apologies if offended any straw men or anyone else.
The tone of this thread was going into a playful mode with the Monty Python reference.
And it was all downhill from there! /S

I totally got it, I should of added a smiley to my "that's a horrible..."
My reply was a feeble attempt to make a strawman argument.

By the way I'd never heard of the "Strawman" before and found the link informative and interesting.
Thanks for starting this thread.

You sir are a gaas (gentleman and a scholar)
David Scott "A gentleman and a scholar

The 4 step communication process,
Formulate the idea in our mind
Select and speak the words to communicate
Heard by a recipient
Understood by the recipient.

Ideally.
And how many ways does this go wrong?
And on a forum how we all interpret things differently? Pandamonium ensues. Lol.

Yeah it's an interesting web site.
Here's what I got email today when I signed up,
https://effectiviology.com/argument-from-incredulity/
How we rationalize things that we don't fully understand.
The human mind is an interesting thing, both good and bad.
Do we have any control over the damn thing?
When emotions run amok...

(another beautiful blue sky day in the High Sierra, not even a cloud in the sky, let alone any inanimate objects).

An easier way to counter the argument from incredulity is to just say .... things are rarely simply black and white, true or false, but almost always shades of grey inbetween. IE, cite the Middle Ground, and go on with your life.

And don't be incredulous, because that's the absolute Pure White Truth on the matter.

@close
Come to the dark side, we have cookies...
Lots.
With ice cream and PBJ crackers. ;)
Step into my stormtrooper white van,
to be...
Assimilated.
We are the Borg, resistance is futile.
Aha ha ha...

@MNPaul, if your sarcasm is really good, then you don't have to add smilies.
