We are WNW(more west) of Sedona in Coconino National Forest. Was coming back from a walk when I noticed some large smoke a few miles east of us. Hard to tell distance, but it looks under 5 miles from where I'm looking at it.

Hopefully it dies down, barring that I hope it goes away from us.

yeah wabbit be prepared to bug out. keep track of the fire and make sure you have a clear escape route. if your escape route is in danger get out immediately. highdesertranger

I was in California once when there were wildfires nearby. I could smell the smoke. Some firemen came by the house where I was staying looking for the fire but they said that there was no need to evacuate...yet. I made up a story about needing a beer so my friends would take me out to the bar because I was so afraid of the fire. I guess it was a really small one since it never made the papers or anything. Probably those firemen found it and put it out right away. We all had a nice time out at the bar and since I really hardly ever drink, I suspect that my friends knew why I suddenly needed a beer but just went along with it to be nice.

Stay safe. I guess one advantage of mobile nomadic living is that you can always drive away from any wildfires.

Wow... that looks like a big fire! Have you found out anything else about it? Please take care, we'd miss your salty humor!!

Talked to a 4wheeler couple who said a fire had been going for the past 2 days. They said they heard that the firefighters were going to backburn about 300 acres. The smoke is now gone from the hill. I think that smoke was from the backburn.

The area we are in, I didn't even think about forest fire. In my imagination, a forest fire needs a forest. However there is more than enough shrubs, grass, and mesquite trees(I think mesquite) that yes fire is an issue. We can be moving in 10 min when we don't have our awning up. Got things ready to go when I got back to camp, but now I think the immediate threat is gone I am able to relax abit. What made me chuckle abit at myself was thinking I might have to drive thru a fire like in some movie. Although I only chuckled at myself after the smoke cleared...lol.

Forest fires... I have a special little phobia about them.

I never knew I did...until today. Prob not super phobia, but I do get claustrophobic and when my imagination kicked in and I started to think of being "trapped" by a fire with no escape, yeah I don't like that feeling!

You should be very concerned about it there, that country is extremely deceptive when it comes to fire. There's ton of very dry fuel, but more importantly the wind can be light and steady and the all of a sudden turn 180 degrees and be blowing like a mad thing.

Yesterday I had to drive down to Ehrenberg from Prescott and that takes you through Yarnell, a tiny town on 89, that's about 50 miles from you and about the same elevation. In 2013 the wind did just that and killed 19 firefighters. Those guys were young experienced and the very best and yet they were killed even though they deployed their tents. An incredible tragedy.

Fire demands respect and kills all who refuse it. Sometimes it even kills those brave and amazing men who deeply respect it but attack it anyway.

Wow, that is a really sad story. The plane overhead with fire retardant and then that "fine" of $560,000. Just a messed up story. Thanks for the reading, def made me more aware of the dangers.

Yarnell tragedy changed the fire fighting strategy.

Wabbit, check this page. I am in arizona and fire history is staggering. 10 years ago near Showlow, burned 470,000 acres! Be safe out there!

Pay attention to the wind direction, but don't treat it as gospel -- when a firestorm gets big enough, it creates its own wind, and all bets are off.

I think I'd be making some space between me and that burn......

I'll trade you.
Our landfill is burning in Elkhart IN.
Guess who's downwind??....
Evacuations of businesses, homes and schools. Lots of toxic yuk in the air!
The fire crew expects to get the blaze under control tonight or tomorrow?
I'm 20 miles East of the landfill and it is still nasty.
