There must be a way to recharge a battery bank using the alternator of the vehicle without damaging the batteries or shortening their life span.

Could someone explain how to set this up in an RV pull trailer, please, in laymen's terms?

Yes, we'll usually recharge by plugging in or using a generator, but I also want the option of charging while enroute.

Not a dumb question. No question is ever dumb. I'd like to know how to do that w/out damaging the battery too.

+1 on Willy's suggestion.

I have the Powerstream unit installed in my vehicle, so far so good.
IMHO using an alternator in a duel battery set-up is good for weekend type camping... But if you are looking for a long term situation you really should look into solar... I charged my batteries via genny for a long time, it was expensive, took along time, bothered your neighbors and took allot of room to store... Now gennys are great when the sun is not out, don't get me wrong, but solar is working all the time when the sun is out...

Solar power is cheaper now than it ever has been in the past and also have gone through some amazing technological advances for the better...
