OK, I know it's almost 2 years later....
I have a PT Cruiser and my first thoughts were to use him (Barney - the purple dinosaur) for stealth sleeping in Portland OR. Base model so no tint and loath to spend any money if I can help it.
Feel that a full-size van is the way to go. But this thread has made me reconsider - at least in the short-term.
They have a pretty large cargo area with the seats out. Anyone have potos of their live-in PT Cruiser? I'll ask in a new post too.
Gas mileage - I heard from other owners about lousy fuel consumption and don't know why they have it so bad. I have a 5-speed and can thrash the nuts off it at times and get around 23 - 26 which is mostly city driving.
A long highway trip to Bellingham WA returned 33mpg. That is pretty accurate as I made the effort to track it for that trip to check mileage. Mostly ran 70-75 with a little Portland commuting traffic a the beginning and end. A more conservative 60-65 would have added at least 3-4 more miles per gal.
Maybe the automatic is the bad mileage culprit? Hate automatics.
Gas mileage depends on driving with a soft touch and getting into the high gears as soon as possible. There is/was a competition in the UK to see who could get the best fuel mileage over a mix of city, rural and highway driving. If I recall, there was a time component as well. Amazing what can be accomplished. Regular 30mpg cars were getting 45 or so.
The Cruiser is a fun vehicle with the stick shift but it does need decent tires and you have to let go the fear of the body lean through hard cornering
