Do you ground battery negative terminal to chassis?

Exactly, I'm just talking about expensive /sensitive stuff you care about and high currents.

Nothing like a "must", not a safety issue, personal preference for "optimal".

Personally I don't ever install using chassis for negative return, everything goes through a buss then shunt to get AH usage logged.

So, can ground panel neg, and lug off chassis to controller panel in neg?

My radio uses less than 2 amps. It is quiet when the ground fails. My refrigerator is fused for 15 amps. The beer gets hot when the ground fails. My inverter uses up to 200 amps. It don't want to hear about a chassis ground.

Does the ground fail in your car and cause your radio to go silent?

I have driven over 1,000,000 miles and I have never experienced ground failure.

most issues with exterior lights on RV's and Trailers are caused by grounding problems. with older vehicles grounding issues are common. this is caused by rust, corrosion, loose hardware, and former owners thinking they know how to fix things. highdesertranger

boyntonstu. My post was a direct response to your post about audio equipment being critical. This time you seem to be going out of context. MLN

I was working as an Electronics Reliability Engineer, and one night my neighbors house was in flames.
The next day, I was asked to investigate the cause.

Potomac Electric Power Company used a #2 Aluminum wire between the outside meter and the breaker box in his basement. I determined that the fire started with the wire overheating causing flammables to ignite.

Aluminum cold flows, has an insulating oxide, and carries much less current than copper of the same diameter.
The Code calls for a 2/0 copper wire for 200 Amps and the #2 Al that PEPCO installed was way undersized.
It turned out that exterior wire up to the meter and the wiring inside the homes are covered by Codes, but the 8 foot service connection wire was not covered.

The situation escalated and we had 275 houses inspected by an electrician and a representative of PEPCO.
We discovered several hot breaker boxes!
We then had a TV debate between a PEPCO engineer and myself about how and when the #2 wire could pass 200 Amps. I easily won the debate.
The story was covered in a 2 column story in the Washington Post, and I was thereafter called Mr. Aluminum Wire.
Several concerned homeowner associations invited me to speak about Aluminum wire.

Finally, PEPCO came to our Cheviot Hills development, and exchanged a 2/0 Copper wire for the #2 Aluminum in all 275 houses.

Aluminum wire was quite a big deal back then.

Yes. I have investigated fires caused by aluminum wires in wall outlets. Public Housing built cheap. But this should be a different thread. No aluminum in my van. In the Expedition, yes. but not the Ram.

How about an "Aluminum vs Copper Wire" thread?

Do you remember COPALUM connectors?

Could you tell me if there's any practical issue grounding the negative wire off the panel, then wiring from the chassis near the Solar controller? Thanks!

Wasn't planning on using anything Aluminum.

OMG.

Really? I hope you're just trolling for the lulz.

First there is no "ground" in a rubber-wheeled vehicle.

Second, modern manufacturing techniques and deterioration with age prevent reliably low resistance connections between many panels / metal bits and the **negative return** to the power source(s).

Finally, if you doubt the above is true, contact tech support at five manufacturers of quality solar controllers, or post your question in forums full of solar experts, and report back here what answer you get.

Y'all really need to stick around a while, look at posting histories, find a way to figure out who to listen to and who to ignore.

Yikes!

Someone take away his Folgers!

Sry, quickly read through the post on my little cell phone,
and couldn't determine what specific solar component you were talking about grounding, precisely.

Perhaps you're just having a bad day, LoL
