[size=medium][font=HelveticaNeue-Light, 'Helvetica Neue Light', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif]Really good TED Talk video:

Very good! I just sent link to my 25 y/o daughter and hope she REALLY listens! :)

God I always love these videos. lol. I'm actually in the process of selling a lot of things as well. Mostly computer parts though.

Changes are being made but I have tell you that the first step is a big one.

I admire those who can speak well without notes. This guys does good. I guess they all practice a ton before these talks.

Great post, thats why I drive a truck for a living. So if I live in a van I can afford to be a pro photographer! Personally I think most spend to much on equipment and not enough on developing good skills to produce great photos!

My plan is when I'm living in a van I wont have to work so much and will have time to build my skills in photography. This is my problem, driving a truck for a living I have spent most of my life working and not doing anything I enjoy!

that reality check article...cant say i agree with his broad assumptions. Or maybe its different in canada. My best friend from college supports himself and family on photography, and i doubt hes anywhere near the top 25% of his field. No way he makes min wage. I dont even think he has a studio, office manager or office and assistance to do it either (shoots models on location or rents a space). Maybe his 'statistics' need a different sampling, i wonder if they are accounting for all types of photography, or just landscape photographers selling sunset stock photos on bigstock.com :D

Photography is a hobby of mine.  Every weekend, I check the DIY Photography Site.

Interestingly enough, this week they have a post entitled:  Why "Do What You Love" advice leads to "I Live In A Van Down By The River" For Creative Professionals.

Regards
John

I skimmed the article and indeed it is using Canadian based statistics.

However, he is also coming from the viewpoint that one needs and absolutely must have a minimum income in excess of the $40,000. that he says a cashier at Costco makes...wonder what Costco that's at...

For those of us who know how to not only survive but thrive on less than 40K, we can cheerfully disregard his advice and get on with doing what we love.

And who says 'living in a van down by the river' is to be avoided at all costs... :D

Costco actually pays it's employees very well, which is why it's hard to get a job there - no one ever quits.
Their cashiers get paid anywhere from $12.75 to $16.95 an hour. Which is still less than $40,000 a year, but is damn good pay for a cashier.

Indeed! No wonder they're always smiling there. :)

I'm already doing what I love!

I earn a decent, but far from spectacular living. Sure, I could make more money doing something else, but that extra money would come at far too high a price.

I've been working in the theatre industry for 25 years and actually earning a living at it for the last 15. I work with lighting and effects at a venue in Southern California. Just a couple days ago I got to rebuild an effects machine that makes fake snow. Today I got to play around with a flying, glowing orb effect for my summer show.

I go to work to play! :p
