HI all! I am planning my entry into van living next summer and am designing my build on paper in the meantime. I plan to spend my winters skiing and summers hiking and mountain biking...mostly off grid. I am leaning towards the Promaster because of the FWD. Anyone have experience with these ski camping or in snowy conditions? Any other recommendations? Thanks  :)

Webasto style heater and very thorough insulation.

AWD Chevy Express / GMC Savannah

I'd take rwd over fwd for snow conditions any day!

Second the AWD Chevy/GMC. Add a high top to it.

Oh and vinyl laminate flooring throughout so you can mop up the snow you'll track in.

Why would you say rwd over fwd?  I would think the opposite.  AWD>FWD>RWD.   Almost There said:

Thanks for the advice! Lot of differing opinions on the FWD vs RWD. Personally I have had better luck with FWD than RWD since it seems to do better on the uphills.

I was originally looking for an AWD but want the extended space of the Promaster or Sprinter.

I've had decades of experience driving in snowy mountains skiing for months at a time on three continents.

RWD vs FWD is irrelevant.

The engine mounted directly over the powering axle is what makes all the difference.

Note modern fancy computer controlled stuff is a big wild card not included in my experience, stuff I have so far successfully avoided.
