I just ordered these new electronics for the van.

BlackVue dash-camera
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B4E9764/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008B8ERIO/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i05?ie=UTF8&psc=1
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BTODTKO/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i04?ie=UTF8&psc=1
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009QZH7BU/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Midland CB Radio (handheld)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000K2YR/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000ATNH3/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Motorola 2-way radio (3 pack)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0058W1I38/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i06?ie=UTF8&psc=1

BlackVue dash-cam:
After much online researching and watching many YouTube videos, I settled on the BlackVue dash cam because it was wifi capability for viewing and downloading videos to my smartphone. Plus it has built-in GPS to track my navigation, a "G" sensor for sensing a shock or accident event, plus "Parking Mode" for surveillance security while vehicle is parked. I also ordered additional accessories so that the dash cam power will be hard-wired to the vehicle battery, plus additional Window Mount so I can take off the dash cam from the van and place into a different vehicle. Plus got a larger 32GB micro-SD memory card for longer video recording. The reason for a dash-cam is to help protect me against crazy drivers, and to also provide automatic surveillance video-taping while van is parked.

Midland CB Radio:
I figure a CB radio is a good thing to have while camping or travelling in remote locations or campgrounds whereby cellular signals will fail. I like this particular handheld CB for its multi power sources, including simple AA batteries, 12 volt power, and rechargeable battery too. I also ordered a larger antenna to install on the roof-top for longer range. I like the fact I can simply use this handheld CB while walking around if I wanted to, instead of being confined inside the vehicle. The reason for getting a CB radio is for emergency purpose if I need to call for help out in the boonies.

Motorola walkie talkie
I figure a 2-way walkie talkie is useful for all types of purposes. I got the 3 pack in case needed for an additional person. I like this particular unit because it seems compact enough to use, plus it has multi power sources including AAA batteries and rechargeable battery. I learned the hard way that cell phone signal is pretty much next to nothing while at a campsite in the mountains. So a 2-way walkie talkie should prove useful to keep in touch with others.

Casey,
I have the Midland CB and it's a great little unit. It also has a very good weather radio built into it. I move the CB between my TransVan and my towed, it's quick and easy to do.

You might want to look at adding a Sat radio to your equipment, I like not having to look for my stations all the time, gives me a familiar set of stations all the time.

Hey Casey, just curious, what was wrong with the dash cam you had?? It was way cool and from what I remember had the same sort of features. I liked that you could view what the camera sees on your phone.

Hi Corky,

Sounds interesting. Does Sat radio require a monthly fee? If so, I'm less interested. If not, I'd be more interested.

Hi Jay!

The BlackVue dashcam works fine. It was my older Motorola Razr smartphone that had a problem with wirelessly buffering the video clips for viewing. My current Samsung Note 2 smartphone is more powerful, hence can better view the wireless video clips streaming from the dashcam with less buffering. Because I have the dashcam set at the highest resolution of 1080p, it requires more processing power versus say a lower 720p resolution. My biggest gripe with the dashcam is that it periodically loses wireless "wifi" connection from dashcam to smartphone, and I would then have to re-enter the password to reset. But even with this gripe, the dashcam is still recording video, just no live streaming if the smartphone loses wireless connection for whatever reason. The wireless connection to a smartphone is really more a "bonus" feature, but it's not really all that necessary. The smartphone is used for live streaming of video feed, as well as for downloading video clips wirelessly from dashcam to smartphone. However, since the dashcam also houses a removable micro-SD memory card, that means you can take out the memory card from the dashcam and insert into a computer to download the video clips. This dashcam has a lot of high tech features built into it, and as such, sometimes all this high tech stuff will have its periodic glitches.

Cheers!
Casey
