In my search to shut off the evil cable bill I have been looking for a way to use the data on my Cricket phone. Even with what I would need a computer for my usage is under a 10th of what I'm allowed. PDA+ will do it but is against the terms.

Deep in Crickets features is a mobile hot spot feature for $10 a month. It only does wireless and only on certain phones so far but it will allow for the use of the 10 gigs of data. That's a total of $65 a month and extra data is $10 for 1 gig.

Cricket is owned by AT&T and uses their network.

In my case it is both. It started out just the high speed internet but a few years back my year old modem stopped being supported. They required their modem and a bundle at the time, so it is costing me a extra $10 a month so that they can provide public WIFI on my electric bill. Once the promotion ended the cost sky rockets to nearly triple of what I was paying for net alone.

This is what I am doing and plan to do. It may or may not work for others.

Hot spot: Straight talk Modem cost me $10 to buy. No Contract plan is $50 for 5GB. I generally use 10GB per month. I just go online before I run out and buy another $50 worth of data. Works fine as long as the Verizon towers don't go down.

I have a no contract smart phone on Straight Talks $45/mo plan Plan says First 5GB Data at High Speeds then 2G. At 2G speeds, the functionality of some data applications such as streaming video or audio may be affected. I am going to pick up a $35 Chromecast at WallyWorld and borrow the code from my daughter to see if her Netflix will work (My other daughter has discovered "Rosemary & Thyme"). If it does, I will add a DVD/Bluray player that can record so the slow downloads aren't a problem (or much of a problem).

TV: I bought one of those "As Seen On TV" flat digital antennas ($15 at Family Dollar) and suction cupped it to the window. I am getting 4 channels (FOX, NBC, PBS and THIS - a movie channel). Not too bad considering I'm 75 miles from ABQ. I'm hoping it will be better once I get back east. If the antenna panel were bigger, I might get more channels. But I went cheap because I didn't think it would work.

Movies: (see about the $10/mo Netflix above) I currently (and have been) renting movies thru Redbox. I get codes for discounts so it works out to be a pretty good deal for me. I use it to screen movies that I may or may not want to buy to add to my collection. I have a tiny notebook that I keep movies that I want to rent (in the back of the book) and movies that I want to buy (in the front of the book). I keep an eye out at thrift stores, Family Dollar and the discount bin at Wal-Mart. I don't pay more than $6 for a movie. I keep my DVDs in a 3" thick 3 ring binder (I toss the cases) in CD holders (4 per side/8 total per sheet). I have two notebooks like this. One is dedicated to multi-part movies and TV series. I keep track of the collection with the free Ant Movie Catalog. Each page is numbered, each DVD location is labeled with the name of the movie that belongs there (I have a label maker). I have over 200 movies and TV series.

I started using the Cricket hotspot feature today. works as advertised. The pogo games and forums I use load just as fast. Youtube runs without buffering, videos too. I have 9 gigs left for the 6 days remaining this month, I'll give it a good test.

The Freedompop wifi should be here tomorrrow, I'll be testing it as well.
