Do cargo vans run up a higher repair bill than other types of vehicles, all other things (age, mileage) being equal? I've heard that they're harder to work on (so more labor charges), and I assume that some parts may cost more (tires?)....

On the other hand, a commercial vehicle would also be designed to take more abuse, thus breaking down less frequently, right? Or maybe that all depends on the make and model....

 Please edumacate me.

I am not super knowledgeable on this, but generally yes, repairs on a van will be more pricey. For example oil changes are going to cost more because you need more oil due to the larger engine size.

I have a feeling any time a mechanic has an excuse for an upcharge they are going to go for it.

On the big three vans: parts are usually shared with pick-ups. Pretty basic. A lot of prices will be the same. (Brakes, servicing, belts and hoses.) Engine access is confined, some rings are extra.

Sprinters are $ specialized.

I found n my Dad's 1986 E150 that changing the air cleaner filter was a major PITA! Very hard to get to the top of the housing for the screw. Took me two hours to do it the first time. Second time took it to a mechanic for a tune-up. He asked me if I wanted the air filter changed? I said "Yes". He cringed - tough job for him to!
A lot easier on the 1988 E150 - it has the rectangular box mounted forward, much easier t get to.
Spark plugs are a PITA too.
For parts, I like RockAuto.com. Good prices generally, fast shipping.

vans cost more, why because mechanics can get away with it. while some vans used to be mostly truck parts not so much any more. some trucks don't even use truck parts. the 1/2 ton models nowadays use more car parts than truck parts. we used to say a f-150 was a t-bird with a truck body. highdesertranger

In my experience mini's are way harder to work on than full sized vans. Just the size factor; there is more clearance around components. ANY van is going to be a PITAa to a degree; it is the nature of the engine compartment design. I find the full sized ones easier to work on though.
