SAN JOSE (KPIX 5) —
"At least a dozen officers are living in RV’s in the parking lot right near the San Jose Police Department’s headquarters.
Mandatory overtime forces them to work up to 17-hour days. Combine those long hours with horrendous traffic, and commutes from as far away as Manteca, Stockton, Tracy and even Reno, these officers are staying in an RV during the week and then driving home on their days off.
It turns out the recreational vehicles are legally parked on city property..."

"...RECREATIONAL VEHICLES ARE LEGALLY PARKED ON CITY PROPERTY..."

interesting and good news for those of you stealth dwelling in the area

They have permission from the person in charge of that lot.

How would that work for us?   Worth asking~~~

I have a feeling the cops doing it are probably enjoying it along with the overtime pay. Report makes it out like living in an RV is the end of the world........some nice RV's too!

There was something similar here in NY some years ago with prison guards staying in trailers and RVs in the parking lot of Sing Sing Prison.  They too would only go home on weekends.  (Which for some of them came in the middle of the week.)  Might even still be going on.

HUH?
Manteca is 75 miles away.
Stockton is 80 miles.
Tracy is 60 miles.
Reno is 250 miles.

I suspect that it's more like those places are where they came from, and they can't afford Bay Area rent prices. But the traffic is HORRIFIC, that's pure truth.

That is how far people have to regularly commute.  There is no affordable housing in the Bay Area.

A lot of Tech workers do that too. I used to see RV's behind AMD and other wafer fabs in the bay area. One guy does it at Intel in Chandler, AZ. Guys would work their compressed shift (12 hr days) and go home on the weekends which were alternating three and four days each.

I had even considered it back in the early 2000's. Making Silicon Valley wage and living in Phoenix and staying in my RV plugged in at work. Flying home every other week only costs $75 a flight one-way if you book far enough out.

$300 a month on air fare is a lot cheaper than paying a mortgage on a $1M+, 1,200 sq ft house built on a crawl space foundation in 1950 in the bay area sitting on an 8,000 square foot lot when you can buy much better house in Phoenix (or ABQ, or PDX) for $200-300K.

That sort of commute isn't bad, I did it with company paid housing on 6 month projects. The money was great!

I'm not one-tiny-bit surprised by this in San Jose.

I've gotten permission to park in police parking lots on occasion telling them I'm fatigued. I was never turned down but did it only a handful of times. I completely get why they are doing it. I had a hard time doing 17 hour shifts as well.

Very cool w/cops livin' in RV's in the dept's lot.

Back in the day (1980-81) when I was living in a hi-cube van while managing several music stores I would park overnight in the Mall's parking lot. Once the cops new i was a manager in a mall shop and i I was inside the van they would often drive by and check on me. I even started having donuts and coffee for them on Sunday mornings : ) It was a hit. Never had an issue living inside the van with the local police or mall owners.

These days with our current rig there is no way we could stealth park anywhere... it is so Van Crush magnet... Now the cops and rangers visit us to check out the van build. It is anything but stealth. For better or worse.

: ) Thom
