I would like to be able to have some perishables like eggs from time to time without having to go to the store or if I take game (legally of course) up to small species of deer. What would be good for these. I typically try to eat only what I use, but sometimes I want to stay out of the city or not have to go to the store. Plus bulk canned food can be heavy at times.

12v coolers suck large amounts of power and only cool 40 degrees below ambient. they are cheap. the better 12v refers use very little power can be used as a freezer. they are pricey. you are going to need a couple of big ones to hold a deer. as far as eggs if you buy unwashed they will keep fairly well unrefrigerated. highdesertranger

+1

Thermoelectric coolers are a waste of money and battery power in 95% of applications.

12v compressor fridges are the way to go, but not cheap and still need 18 to 40 amp hours of replenishment per day for small ones in the 2 cubic foot range.

Solar with a 12v compressor cooler is the way to go. If you get the 'chest' style it can be used as a deep freeze unit and you can make ice to throw into a regular (well insulated) cooler for keeping stuff that merely has to be chilled. ..Willy.

I just spent 300 bucks on a yeti tundra 45qt ( bear proof) YOW ebay windfall covers it but that better be a great cooler.
