Cooking on a road trip

Originally, I did plan to cook some meals in the topper, but it was at least 89 degrees in there most evenings, and well over 90 during the day so cooking inside never happened. I cooked on either a Coleman camp stove or a single burner propane stove. In 26 days I only cooked three meals... two breakfasts and one supper. I had planned to cook many more suppers, but several nights I parked too late to actually cook.

The first breakfast was at a $5 campsite I found and had all to myself.

The supper was spaghetti that I made at a highway rest stop on Rte 84 in northern PA. I asked the attendant there if cooking on the picnic tables was ok... he didn't know but allowed that there were no signs prohibiting it, and the state troopers were probably too busy writing speeding tickets to care anyway.

I believe that cooking simple meals at a rest stop or any picnic area is not only allowed but expected.

As always, do what you need to do, then leave the area cleaner than you found it.

I've cooked eggs, bacon and coffee at a rest stop. It had covered picnic tables and a water spigot for washing up. Only problem was every dog that walked by was whining for the bacon....and the owners were sniffing the air for the coffee, LOL.

Happy you had a good time despite the changing plans. That is life on the road, :)

Hopefully you can get out and do some boondock camping trips instead of being stuck in parking lots or on the streets in urban settings. Unfortunately there are no easy solutions to cooking inside a camper shell in hot weather. You will could park somewhere that tailgating is normal in the evenings, like at a local municipal park baseball field. You could even enjoy the game. Free entertainment, it can be a fun weekly thing to do with your evenings.

Dang 3 meals in 26 days.  That had to be expensive.  Highdesertranger
Well, two of the weeks I was out, I was actually at my kid's houses...however, at my son's house I did buy most of the food. While actually traveling I didn't eat much...mostly snacking while driving, and driving too late to feel like cooking.

I also cook very little on a road trip, mostly eating cold food out of the cooler but careful to stick with foods that agree with good digestion. I also carry some bag salad so I can eat my greens.

Talk about getting hassled for cooking, one time I stopped at Starvation park on the Columbia River and ate my bag salad sitting in the topper while admiring the view of the river, got hassled by the ranger for "camping": no stove, no pots and pans, just me and my bag salad.

Really makes no sense what they do.

That's why bureaucracies work so well... people don't think for themselves.
