I generally don't have much use for Harbor Freight and the mostly crap they sell, but my brother picks up odds and ends from them.  Lately he's been bringing home welding rod holders to better organize his shop.

When I saw them it occurred to me that - like ammo cans - they might make useful containers for van dwellers.  The HF price seems to be a lot lower than any of the ones Amazon sells.  I was thinking I might keep a couple of road flares in one, but I'm sure they could be useful for a lot of stuff.

Anyway, just a thought.

People have been using those as tool tubes on KLR 650's for decades.  Personally I prefer ABS pipe for my KLR's, but the welding rod holders are plug-n-play/ready to go "out of the box".  Just add hose clamps.

Wonder if they are food safe as in Spaghetti, rice, etc. I guess you could zip lock plastic bag the item first and then stuff it into the tube.
Would need a magic marker too, so your not eating laundry soap instead of oatmeal.

Unless they are labeled as 'food grade' the mold release used in manufacturing is not healthy to ingest.  Polyethylene like Ziploc bags, will not protect from contamination long term (how long? I don't know).  Not something I would be interested in trying.

Probably cheaper to make your own out of PVC plumbing tubes and end caps if you need a lot of them. I keep my rice, pasta, etc in 1/2 gallon and 1 qt sized canning jars. For the things that will be sealed for a long time, I use the jar lid sealer attachment for my foodsaver. I have the jar lid attachment for both wide mouth and regular mouth jars. I've bounced canning jars down the road - uncushioned - since 1987. Haven't lost a jar due to traveling yet. Same track record as with my vintage Corelle. The quart jars fit nicely into the crates that 2 liter soda bottles come in (the separated 8 ct ones).

round containers are so space inefficient. I have been on a quest to find food containers that a square or rectangular. so far with limited success. or yeah non plastic too. damn I am picky. highdesertranger

HDR,
I had been looking at stainless, so I looked at that search for on Amazon -- lots of those but all are round. If glass will do, take a look at some of these:

thanks Writer. glass is actually the best I am just not sure how it will hold up on the roads I travel. I am going to try some mason jars the ones that are kinda square. my vacuum sealer will seal those.
here's a cool story when I was at one of my Desert Field Studies classes the Professor took us on a hike on a very old trail. the whole class was behind him walking down the trail, well me being me I thought walking down the trail with 20 other people was boring so I walked about 20 feet off the trail just far enough that I wasn't in the group but could still hear what was going on and take notes. well he stopped to explain something or another and as I was writing in my note book something caught my attention, out of the corner of my eye under a bush. after jotting down the notes I went to investigate. it was a very old large mason jar with a glass lid about 1/2 full of water. obviously some old timers water stash. boy I was the talk of the class everyone wanted to see it. I still have it.
on a side note on that same trip I took a cross country hike by myself, off any trail just walking though the desert. you will never guess what I found this time, an arrowhead. after that trip a lot of people at school who I didn't even know would come up to me and ask me how I found all this cool stuff and how could they find stuff like that. well I told them just slow down and look around don't go down the trail where everyone else goes go off the trail. well I think I am off mason jars and containers. so I will shut up now with one final thought take the road less traveled. highdesertranger

When ever you are around civilization, stop by and see what The Salvation Army store has.  Sometimes I find all kinds of neat things. I once got a 2 qt ss Vacuum bottle for $2.50.

I see a lot of the square jars and bottles there.

LOL.. two things, HDR,
Reading about your advice to walk where others don't, I had in mind to reply with the Frost line and "and that has made all the difference."

And, I'm thinking you now have honed your observational skills focusing on all those tiny flecks of gold.
