Hi everyone,  Just got back from car dealer. I do not have a van.  I did not know you had to put commercial plates and insurance if you bought a cargo van...So ...I did not get it.  I was wondering if that is just in New York State or other states.  They said it still had to be commercial plates even if I did not use it for business...  I never heard anyone mention commercial plates on cheapliving forums...

Ask the DMV if you bought a 'cargo' pickup, say a heavy duty 'one ton', if you would also need commercial plates.

At any rate, some states have certain laws you have to follow. You might want to dig further into the actual laws of New York and see if it can be registered as a private vehicle.

I don't know about New York but I do know in California all pick up trucks have commercial plates no matter what. however that doesn't mean you must have commercial insurance. if it is for personal use you don't need commercial insurance. highdesertranger

My cargo van has been registered/insured in North Carolina (where I bought it), South Dakota (where I set up my nomad residency) and Arizona (where my residency is now). I never needed commercial registration or insurance.

I'm registered in NJ. I can chose commercial or passenger registration for pick-up and cargo vans.
