Hunkered in the bunker.
Well, having delved deeper under the hood of my inherited 1986 Ford E150 Econoline I have decided it's too far gone to put more money into. Tomorrow (Friday) I am going to a local dealer to check out a nice 1988 Ford E150 Factory Conversion Van. I know it needs some AC work. Looks pretty good from the CL pics. It should be a better platformv to work with. Has the low Conversion top and middle bucket/rear bench seats - these I would remove.
The ad says it has the 302cu in V8 with 112,000 miles. The price is right. I can transfer the tag and insurance from my current rust bucket to it.

Air condition will require conversion. Lots of $$$. Offer accordingly. Also most suspension rubber needs replacement.

Thanks. This could shave a lot of time off my having a good van camper. And I need a good driver to use while my minivan goes into the shop for a week or so. Already located sources online for any rubber stuff needing replacement. Most of the stuff already acquired will transfer to the new van.

Got my new-to-me van! 1988 Ford E150 Conversion Van, 118,000+ miles on the 302Cu In V8. Ad said 'New'..... far from it! It has some problems as you would expect for a 26 year old van. But I drove it to my Mom's place (she drove her car back after we went to the dealer), then a night drive to my place.
Got some rust issues, mostly the rain channels (typical for these vans). The headlights are out of adjustment, but got me home on a dark highway. Light switch and rear door locks are needing replacing - I can K-ball those off my Dad's old 1986 E150. The side mirrors are loose - I have a new set. Can't figure out how to turn off the danged radio, or change channels - that's a learning curve issue. ;)
Has a minor oil leak - shouldn't be hard to fix.
Needs new tires, and maybe a battery - I have new ones on the '86 rust-bucket van, not a problem.
It has the smallest 'high top', with about 1en inches or so higher ceiling, but lower over the cab.
Front seats recline and swivel - BONUS! The Third Seat (middle) also reclines. All are Captains Chairs, but a few missing arms.
Rear bench folds into a bed - too small for me though. Third and Bench seats will be removed. Floor, walls and ceiling are carpeted. Floor carpet is raggedy in places, so will likely replace it.
Right rear conversion window needs a replacement screen for the sliding bit.
$1,500 plus tag & title, and we changed the '86 tag to the '88 Conversion. I just need to get the insurance switched tomorrow, which I can do online.
Ultimately it will need a paintjob, as the paint is rough in places - some paint damage on the driver's door especially. Overall, not a bad van to begin a camping conversion on.
It will need a frame-mount receiver hitch too. Gotta be able to tow my open trailer with the bike.

Nice van. Can you stand up inside? If so, what's your height?

WOW...$1500??? That's not a bad score at all!!

Looks pretty clean on the inside. I'd bet you could put that rear couch on CL for $100 and it'd be gone by the end of the day. I'd bet you could swap the arm rests (and maybe the whole seats if necessary) around to get a workable pair for the front.

Nice van!

I am 6'4", so no, definitely NO standup! But certainly better than a regular cargo van. Only rust so far is the rain gutters. But I haven't really delved into it yet. No obvious sign inside of water leakage. Next heavy rain, I will get in and give a good looksee. NO dank smell either, which the old '86 does have - it definitely leaks inside! Biggest worry will be those roof windows facing forwards.

Ruh-Roh! Disaster strikes! Well, not that bad, but......

On my way to the hunting lease next county over, first out-of-town drive for the new-to-me van. Luckily had my hunting buddy close by. We had nearly reached our breakfast joint that morning, where we'd eat before going on out to the lease to do some shooting. Had two rifles, my range bag and other stuff in the van.
Suddenly, she loses power, and I coast to the roadside. I've had a problem of the temp gauge not reading anything - now I know why....
She ran HOT! Rusty water coming from the radiator cap.
Danggit.......
We got her cooled down, then some water into the radiator and limped it to the store/restaurant. Good folks there, and the cook is a personal friend. I called AAA for a tow after we ate breakfast. Got her to town - Note to self: UPGRADE to AAA Plus! Regular AAA is only free towing FIVE miles! Plus will give me 100 miles.
I have the garage going through the van. Looks like the water pump is bad, so they are replacing. Called them this morning and find the screws all broke, and it'll need a new timing chain and cover. Gas mileage has been less than expected, so I am having them do a full tune-up as well.
So at the moment I am driving my Mom's car. My minivan is also down, needing serious brake work. Danggit - two vans down! Major bummer right now....... :(

It's true that basic AAA service only gives you a very limited several miles of towing. Then it costs much more for overage per mile for going over your allotment. I believe it's also a requirement for something like 48 hours waiting period for the new upgrade to kick in. In other words, you can't simply call AAA today to upgrade service and have your vehicle towed 60 miles away in the same day. I know this cuz I had called AAA to inquire about the requirements for upgrading.

Well, got the big van back today. It set me back $975 for the repairs. Turned out to be more seriously sick than I first thought. So much for my 'sweet deal'...... :-(
But I do like the van, so am pressing on with the refit project.
