Ugh. A few days ago I got something far worse than The Knock.

I was parked in a Walmart parking lot, in the back with the road by the store in front, and, trying to get my sleep schedule back on track, took a few Benedryls. Not long after drifting off, at only about 8:30pm, I wake up to my van shaking a bit. I look out my driver window to see a car pulled up very close and at an angle. I also see someone under my van, the angle of the car hiding him from view.

I get out the cargo door VERY groggy but with my tire iron in hand. He must have heard me get out because he got back in his car and started it. I was very disoriented and scared. I have to admit I'm awful with confrontation. I also wasn't thinking clear enough to even consider someone stealing my gas. I generally had no idea what he was doing. I ask him if he was under my van and, of course, he says no, that he was eating in his car. He then sped out of there and I was too sleepy/stupid to get his plate number.

So I look underneath and he has cut into my fuel tank filler hose and the siphon hose is still in there. For the laymen, which was me before reading up on it, this is a thick rubber hose that connects the fuel filler neck (pipe that runs from where you put the gas in) to the fuel tank. I found out this simple piece is $150 on my E150, before tax or labor (and I may need to replace the filler pipe too since it's nearly rusted through, more than doubling the price).

Our vans are at particular risk for this since they're so far off the ground and hold so much gas. I'm waiting on repairing it since I'm broke at the moment. A mechanic said he has the same issue for a long time and I just need to patch it and put something down to catch the gas when filling. I haven't tried yet but hopefully it won't leak TOO much. There is a safety valve on the tank so it is no danger when driving. Now I'm making sure to always park with a curb as close as possible to the driver side so no one can get under it.

So be warned, fellow vandwellers. I was kind of lucky. He didn't get much (if any) gas and he didn't drill into my tank. It's still disconcerting and an expensive fix.

Wow. Looks like we need armor around the gas filler hose and the cat. With the invention of the cordless grinder there is not much that cant be gotten. Some steel plate near the cat or fuel system hose may make it not worth while for them.

Dang, I'd be pissed. Good thing I have running boards on both sides of my conversion van which make it virtually impossible for anyone to get under the vehicle. At one time I was thinking to remove the running boards. I'll leave them on now.

What a bummer, I'd be terrified if that happened while I was sleeping. I pretty sure my dogs would notice and sound the alarm if it were my van. That thief would have gotten a good sized bump on his head trying to get away when he heard my big guy bark.

Thats a pretty big problem around here too.. Some sort of metal wrap would help definitely. I dont think anyone would take a grinder to a fuel line wrapped in metal, with all the sparks it would cause.
Then again, I wouldnt think anyone would steal fuel like this in a well lit parking lot. Its a real shame, and something to look out for.

I have split the gun discussion from this thread and put it in Off Topic, as we all know how it is likely to end (or be ended).
Siphoning is an important topic, so please continue to discuss it here. For guns and siphoning, using a gun to stop siphoning, or heck, even using a gun as a siphon :D, please see the thread in OT.

In many places the law about parking direction is actually enforced. Parking with your right hand side to the curb will draw attention.

I'm not sure what would be on a Ford but NAPA stores usually have the large diameter (2-1/4"?) filler hose for about $10 per foot.

Greetings!

That's a big problem with rigs that look like their owned by a business, the thieves figure big business has deep pockets and insurance, so they're not really hurting anyone. They probably figure commercial rigs have lots of fuel in them too.

When I had a cargo van for a while, twice, I had some idiot DRILL a hole into my tank from underneath. I'm surprised that didn't blow the van sky high. Same rig they unbolted the fuel line at the fuel pump, and another one cut the fuel line in front of the tank.

If they want it bad enough we're pretty much screwed. Had a Chevy one time, I got back, started it up and took off, got about 1/2 block down the road and it died and wouldn't restart. Looked at the gas gauge and it said empty, I figured somebody must have siphoned it dry... Had AAA bring me some gas, and when I opened the gas door, SURPRISE... Went straight through to the ground, they stole the whole tank, filler tube, neck, and everything. Lot of good my locking gas cap did...

Cheers!

this happened in a parking lot. Laws about parking direction only apply when in the street.

My buddy has a Roadtrek Campervan, and twice now, he's had some shithead cut his fuel inlet and siphon his tank dry. (he lives on a rural piece of land and this was parked under a lean-to on his property.) He's now installed a full surveillance camera system all around his property.

Perhaps a full or partial panel covering the vulnerable areas is needed? Insulate while you're at it too. It's hard to drill into something that you can't locate. Use the spray foam in a can to hide/protect filler hoses (don't seal up any vents... use flexible tubing to keep vents open). With diesel hitting $4 and up per gallon, we need to think about a bit of security although our tank is currently bone dry (been sitting for a few years).

Ever hear about the guy who siphoned, by mouth, what he thought was the fuel tank of an RV? I don't want holes drilled into either my fresh water tanks or my waste tanks by some idiot. Those tanks will be insulated and protected from holes being punched in them as well. At this time our idea is to use foam insulation and roofing metal sheets

Question please for those in the know. Is it possible to siphon gas from under the front end of the van? In other words, from under the engine compartment of a Ford van? Or can a thief only siphon gas from the under side of the van?

The siphoning would be from the tank at the rear. Only gas lines go to the front. If they were stoopid enough they might cut a line in front. Most vans since the mid-80's have fuel injection, so the lines have gas under high pressure in them....Woooomph, if there's a spark.

Drilling the tank with a portable drill is probably the most likely. Dang...I never worried about this before. Maybe I should and think about adding some armor.

I think that gas would have to be pumped to get out of the tank. There are check valves and filters that would put a lot of resistance on a straight flow. So the answer would be no.

My Son in Law was sleeping in his car when they were having a hard time. I had my daughter and his children at my house, and he stayed in his car close to work to save the $150 a week fuel bill. He hears someone siphoning gas out of his tank. He said he waited until the guy was done, and slipped out the other side and took his keys. The scared kid had to re siphon the gas out of his own truck, and fill the tank he just emptied.

Anywhere they can get to the fuel tank or any fuel line, you are vulnerable.

It is REALLY hard to stop, if they want it bad enough, they're going to get it, and I think a lot of them are on drugs because they do a lot more work and cause a lot more damage than they have to.

I switched out my locking gas cap for a non locking one, and right where the filler hose goes into the tank, I put one of those spring jobbers. So now they can stick their siphon hose in about 4 feet, but all they'll get is fumes. So far, so good...

If I caught someone siphoning gas out of my vehicle, whether I'm inside or outside, the first thing I'd probably do is press the panic alarm on my Viper/Clifford alarm remote. My vehicle makes a loud alarm noise which would probably make the thief bump his head up against the vehicle and pass out! :D

Good idea! I had thought about that, too. I still don't like the idea of his getting away scot-free only to target somebody else.

I would try to somehow trap him under the van without hurting him and wait for the cops. I have various chains, cables and locks that I keep around to secure a gen. or motorcycle.

Because I'm a boondocker I think I'm in almost zero danger of this. Nobody can come near my camp without being really obvious. And I am very rarely in town at night. Probably a dozen nights in the last 6 year.

Another reason I love boondocking!!!
