I would throw down some bear spray at the sucker!

Greetings!

Now there's an idea I really like, and keep them immobile with it until the cops get there. They move spray em again.

Cheers!

People need to keep in mind that pepper spray is not considered non-lethal, it is considered "less-lethal" force.

How do you know whether the guy you are spraying doesn't have asthma, or some other breathing problem? You're pepper spray could cause him to stop breathing.

Or you spray somebody and he's now blind and in pain. In an effort to get away, he stumbles into traffic and is hit and killed.

He's just as dead as if you whipped out a gun and shot him, and you're going to have just as much explaining to do as if you had.

Bottom line, the use of "less-lethal" FORCE on another human being is still the use of FORCE. Any time you use FORCE against another human being, you need to be prepared to legally defend your use of FORCE in court.

Regards
John

start your vehicle drive "off" if you can

And there's the smart answer!

I took a personal defense class for women in Elizabethton, TN while staying there. Being aware of your surroundings was very important. If you were someplace that felt creepy, trust your instincts and leave the location as quickly as possible. The first response we were told (repeatedly) was to get away if possible without confrontation. Being able to protect ourselves using physical means was a last resort. The goal was to flee or disable and flee. And I would estimate that about 90% of the women taking the class had been assaulted in their past. It was good therapy (I felt sorry for the guy in the padded suit). The other 10% were friends and children (including one of mine) of the formerly assaulted women. Pepper sprays and guns were not encouraged as they could be taken and used against you. Although the female cop who was teaching the class told us local place to buy the same spray the cops used. She said the stuff normally sold to civilians was junk and a waste of money.

When we park in a parking lot, we park in a manner to where we can pull right out if we have to (facing out and at an angle). No unhooking the towed. No doing anything that would cause us to get out of the bus. And it would have to be a pretty beefy vehicle to prevent us from leaving as we are in a 40 ft Blue Bird Schoolbus. We might not move fast but we are hard to stop. If I get a bad feeling about a place, David is very willing to listen to me and move on. He understands that women tend to have very good instincts about danger. I feel we all do. I believe our brain can seek out potential situations and alert us to potential danger by creating an "uneasy feeling". Just because I can't point out the danger doesn't mean it does not exist. When we travel, I usually have at least three stops picked out. 1st is the "early stop", 2nd is the "on time" stop and the 3rd is my backup in case we are either unable to stop at the "on time" stop or if for some reason we need to move on (can't park or bad feeling).

There is a southbound rest stop on I-25 north of Socorro NM that we would stop at for a bathroom break when we did a run to ABQ for supplies. Some days/nights I was fine with it. Some nights it creeped me out so badly I told David (who never had to use the bathroom) to lock the doors and park directly in front of the bathroom door and keep the motor running. At the time we had the food cart working the plaza in Socorro and the sheriff would buy sandwiches from us. David told him about my reaction to the rest stop. Cop said that sometimes travelers get attacked there. Sometimes just robbed, sometimes robbed and beaten. For women it was sometimes worse. The rest stop has raised decking and enclosed shelters for viewing the desert and cop said that people would hide under the decking and in the shelters. Sometimes just to sleep, others were preying on the unsuspecting. It's a neat idea but the potential for nefarious dealing in the dark is high. I would not want to spend the night in this particular rest stop (or the almost identical on on the northbound side of the road) as the state troopers rarely swing thru and at that they don't slow down.

Compass,
I have never seen anything like that and its amazing that they built it that way. It looks like everything you shouldn't build. :)
Dark, compartmentalized, secretive, easy hiding as compared to an open tall structure with high visibility in and out of it.

mackerous, sorry to hear about your misfortune. as far as repairing, gates rubber sells all kinds of the rubber filler hoses if you go to their web site they have an application guide you can get the part number and go to a parts store and they can order your hose. much cheaper than you quoted. as far as the metal portion goes, go to a junk yard a part like this is fine to get used. just make sure it's not all rusted like yours. highdesertranger

So I'm wondering... If you were to get a newer vehicle that is Flexfuel capable (can run on gasoline or E-85, which is mostly alcohol), would people be less likely to try and steal your fuel? Most cars can't run on E-85 and will do damage. A potential thief would have no way of knowing what is in the victim's vehicle, and probably couldn't/wouldn't be able to test it before using it anyway.

Do you think they would pay attention to the flexfuel stickers and gas caps? If so, what if you just get a flexfuel sticker and yellow gas cap for your vehicle as a potential deterrent?

That's a pretty good idea. Kinda like a fake alarm decal. But then you're dealing with crackheads and tweakers so it might not be effective in the dark.

another reason to own a well trained big dog. Let him loose to scout it out. They bad guys hiding will be found fast.

I second the dog Idea!!!.........If I open the door the dog is coming out first and can do the first 50 yards in around 5 seconds!!

husky with an attitude!!! and she is not social !!
