2x2 uprights and cross beams are plenty until you get into the total body weight of occupants say over 450lbs or somewhere thereabouts or you're planning on using the bed for gymnastics!

Ok, what is "colder weather"? I plan to follow the nice weather; ie 40-70 degrees F. I was going to use plywood over 3-4 slats so I could easily access storage under the bed.
 
You'll be fine in that kind of weather!

Some of the members live year round in northern areas and have to heat the van when it's below freezing. At those temperatures venting the underside of the mattress becomes important.

If you ever find that you do have condensation on the underside of the mattress you can always take the drill and a 2" hole bit and open up the plywood that way.
