I did a search and did not find this topic anywhere.  So, I thought I'd ask!

1.  I'm from Colorado... I've HEARD that some police in neighboring states treat Colorado plates as a "red flag"
2.  I do have a "red card" ... it helps with Arthritis and insomnia.  I take a lot less ibuprofen.
3.  Cannabis is illegal still in Utah, Nevada, Wyoming , Oklahoma, NM and Kansas.

At this time, I figure my state to roam is Colorado.  If I decide to quit, then that opens up the rest of the country.  Meaning, I can't carry weed in my vehicle AND travel through the neighboring states.

Anyone else in this great forum deal with this? and willing to share any experiences.  If I'm breaking forum protocol, I apologize and the moderator is welcome to delete my post.

Thanks in advance,

Pat

FWIW...I am fully AGAINST recreational drugs and fully FOR medical marijuana. Having said that...beware that when you camp on BLM land you are comletely under FEDERAL laws......

I'm from Colorado but I don't have a need to use Cannabis. I'm also over 50 so I'm not in the target group. That said, I do know several young people who have been pulled over seemingly randomly for slight infractions, like 3 miles per hour over, and then been asked a series of questions that appeared the officer was looking for pot. This has happened in both Wyoming and Kansas, and usually just after crossing the border. The funny thing is, if I were an officer, I would target cars with their own states plates coming back across the border. In my experience they are the ones most likely to be transporting pot into their state. It's legal here so if a person wants to partake for recreational reasons and they have family in Colorado, they just come back home.

I've spent most of my adult life peeing for pay so little I can share, but my experience as a LEO (and knowing current LEOs) tells me many will view it as a personal thing, a "not in MY town" thing. So be careful.

FWIW I think drug laws are ridiculous, just leave people alone... IF they break the law under the influence, then go after that offense.

Thanks for all the feedback! All very interesting and thought-provoking. Especially the pointer to the post regarding guns as well.
I have a CCW, but rarely carry open or concealed. I'll be looking into that as well, as I plan and prepare.

Come to the beautiful Pacific Northwest. It's no big deal here in Washington and Oregon where recreational and medical are legal.

Arizona comes up for vote on rec use this year...if we get enough signatures.
I certainly would not want to cross state lines with any weed. Living as we do, mostly on fed land, even a medical card is no help.

The VA is doing a survey and studies that IF all goes well, they will be able to prescribe cannabis. We expect to see some results from that in the next year, according to my doctor, who is all for it.
I use it for appetite, sleep, and pain...plus, I like a mellow buzz sometimes.

I'm in NM and I know there are several places that sell medical marijuana. I'm sure you have to have a NM "card", but perhaps not. Ck with your docs cause my doc wants me to start the process for pain, anxiety ... seems we should be able to cross state lines with a doc's rx ...

Anyway, don't know if that gives you any info that is worthwhile, but I KNOW there's a shop in Corrales, NM that sells med mj (here's a link I just found http://nmmmj.com/marijuana-dispensaries/ - however, you do have to have NM card.

and of course appearance will play a part
dirty hippie lookin with peace and love written on the van vs clean cut, clean rig with n.r.a. and god bless america bumper stickers

Thank You......... I was using a whole different F word.... .....I did come up with a few "different/unique" combos

I thought I just heard the Feds were going to vote on it soon on whether or not to declassify it as a class 3 drug, in which case it would be more or less legal everywhere. Looks like the States are one by one making it legal in some manner or another, so I don't think we have long to go before its accepted everywhere. Heck, I live in Mass the land of restrictions and we even voted in favor of it. I have had chronic pain for three years and unfortunately weed doesn't do anything for me.

There are many different strains and hybrids.  If it is legal there, go to a dispensary and ask questions.

Yes, some strains have much different qualities/effects.  When my back last went out,  to my surprise, one particular strain was far more effective than tramadol which is a fairly strong opiate and was taken much more liberally than prescribed

It also allowed me to isolate the spasming muscle and work out the serious knot locked in place.

Try some of the concentrates.  Kief or hash.  With these half a lungful can be adequate for relief.

I don't think Colorado plates mean much - its more about being on a highway leaving the state and fitting some stereotype the officer is on the lookout for. It could happen at other random times as well - in Northern Nevada around the time of Burning Man, near Sturgis during the bike rally (this happened to me) etc. The card does little good unless you're currently in the area it covers and are transporting any stash you might have in an approved manner. I know people who were pulled over heading to Burning Man and were asked if they had any drugs on them. They said they did but they had a California med card and they promptly receive tickets and had their stuff confiscated. If they had simply said nothing and asked if they could leave they would have probably been fine.

Even within Colorado it's not legal to light up on public lands. It's probably not enforced heavily but it's still best to be careful.

One big problem you'll have is the smell. If you're smoking or even vaping every day your rig WILL smell which can become probable cause to search if the officer is so inclined. So... minimize the smell if you can. Smoke it outside or use edibles.

Minimize the chances of getting pulled over - make sure all of your lights are functioning, license plate is in clear view, replace cracked windshields, drive the speed limit. Watch some youtube videos on what to do if you get pulled over. Don't volunteer any information about drugs you're carrying even if they were legal when and where you purchased them. Be polite but make it clear you would like to be on your way.

Also keep an eye on laws in the states you're traveling. In many states under an ounce is just a fine so make sure you're under that one ounce!

It's easy. if you leave Colorado, leave the dope at home.
