I'm considering looking at this van. Note that despite his claims that he won't lower the price, he doesn't want to sell the van and all the blah blah blah why this is a good deal (i.e. I'm guessing he's kind of an a$$hole), this van has been listed continuously for well over 6 months. He drops in references to issues: ball joints, shocks, exhaust, clear coat peeling and that it has been sitting for a few years. He has dropped the price a couple times. So question is whether it's even worth looking at. It's a about an hour from me.  https://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/rvs/6178501489.html

So with another grand or more in repairs (just to pass inspection), paint issues, likely bottom side rust, you really think that's worth your time?

I'd pass, personally.

Do you want and need all of that in a vehicle? Wouldn't a "plain" conversion , a window/passenger or a cargo be a better platform to start with and make as you want? Then you aren't paying for all of his "precious" stuff...

if the seller doesn't want to sell it why do they keep dropping the price? highdesertranger

PASS...over-priced. maybe $3,500.

I posted my van for $1800 and got zero interest. It had new batts, solar, 20g tank, toilet, all kinds of new parts (brakes, exhaust, vacuum lines), ran great, but an '85 for $1,800.... again ZERO interest. The thought that someone would give this a consideration for $5.5k blows my mind.

Y'all are confirming my thoughts. There's no "precious stuff" he's offering - just suggestions on what one can buy. In this area, camper vans are unicorns so I guess he thinks he can get his price.

As for finding something else, I am still concerned about how much conversion I can do myself and also whether any park would allow a van. For the most part I'll be boondocking but certain times of year I'll be in places where there's no free camping or I'll need hookups (extreme weather in NV and CO while visiting family). Also so impossible to find a high top around here.

That looks like a cargo van with carpet. Probably could do better elsewhere.

Definite pass IMO - that high top isn't tall enough for you to stand up in (unless you're maybe 4'8"), you'll be ripping out the seating/carpet in no short order and it's way overpriced for anything that's early 90's.

It's admittedly been sitting for several years which means that there's probably (not absolute) rubber that needs replacing. Also mentioned is that 'half of the brake lines' have been replaced. If half needed to be replaced, good chance that the rest of them aren't very far behind!

What a piece of junk!  $6,500 is a price I'd expect to see in California, not out east.

Personally I'd pass on it too.  Too cluttered and full of stuff you'll likely want to remove anyway when you build it out.
Might as well start off with something that's already a blank slate.

That fold-out bed not only looks really uncomfortable with it's gaping seams between the padding, but it's a major waste of space!

CAUTION!!!

This ad ran in my local CL...in Indiana.

I believe its a fake. Use CAUTION.
Same description (no clunking noise, needs fixing, etc. and the pic is the same house).
Leave this one be.

Good work on that.

My main issue on any for sale vehicle is that if the seller knows it won't pass their state inspection (guess there's some value to those), then in addition to informing you of the fact, the price should reflect that its basically un-licensable until repaired. His price is as high as a fully inspected and repaired vehicle, and then some. A classic car it ain't...

So either he thinks he has something worth way more than it is, or is just a greedy sob. Maybe a third option in there as well...
