No, I wasn't one of the guys in the climb. Fortunately for me my hip and thigh were rebuildable. I met several of the guys while undergoing physical therapy. The gentleman in the middle is a great friend of mine who slowed down not one bit after his legs were blown off. He hates the term "lost his legs" because he knew where they were. They made the last 50 yards or so with their chairs tied around their necks. They were helicoptered down.

Each time I go to Big Bend I am reminded of their climb.

I finally saw the photos. That left me speechless as I know the climb. I will probably be out of line asking what happened if it happened in Big Bend. Will be back there late September for 6 months. Let me know if ever there. We have plenty of room, I can cook! Rain water (filtered for drinking) and will have power again as my solar was stolen about a week ago. Such is life.... Just stuff as you probably know.

They were all Vietnam Vets, either paraplegic or amputees. The climb happened in the early 80's, I was still in the service, I got a letter (remember those?) from Joe Moss, the black guy in the middle of the group, telling me of their plans. They were going to take one of the more difficult routes "just for fun". He still has an 8"x10" glossy of him laying against a tree with tourniquets on both stumps and one of his legs beside him. Says it gives him motivation.

I wish I was half as tough
