My brother had the Weather Channel on this morning - Wake Up with Al.  I wasn't really paying attention to it, it was just background.

They mentioned something about a wildfire in - I think - CA.  A camper was using a cat hole and tried to burn his toilet paper rather than burying it with the waste.  That started the fire.  The camper was arrested.

Funny.  I think I heard that you're no longer supposed to bury your used toilet paper.  These days, I think you're supposed to either burn it or pack it out.

Something to think about

Since he was arrested and charged I can only assume that he was camping inside an area with a total fire ban.

The problem in this instance isn't burning your toilet paper - it's someone who didn't understand that a fire ban IS a FIRE BAN!

What part about not lighting a fire didn't he understand?

Burying toilet paper is okay as long as it's buried deep enough. If it's buried shallow the animals dig it back up and in a heavily used area like around a shelter on a trail it leaves a field of 'white flowers'.

It seems that a lot of people think that 2 or 4" is deep enough - it's not!

There are some areas where wag bags are required, particularly at higher elevations because there is no sufficient soil base to allow for digging deep enough.

I carry several doggie poo bags in my pottie kit on all hikes. It's easier to pack toilet paper out than it is to properly bury it.

You're probably right, but now you've got me wondering.  Even if there WASN'T a fire ban, if you start a fire that does significant damage, wouldn't you still be subject to arrest?

yeah if there was a fire ban, which there probably was. then I would say bust him. people that ignore fire bans are idiots, I have seen the destructive force of fires first hand. having said all that, I burn my tp only not during a burn ban. highdesertranger
