That's uplifting info Winslet. I've never had a toilet seat bidet and never thought through the possibilities of having one, but I can see how maintaining it if I had one would be a matter of concern.

I've never had problems with the knife valve on my toilet and, when I take a dump, I first pump a bit of water from the top tank into the bowl, and then lay a couple of squares of TP along the back of the bowl.. no mess! Also, if you're driving and have a bit stuck to the bowl, put a bit of water in the bowl and it will clean itself. Just don't drive too wildly. ..Willy.

I don't think anyone mentioned the Bumper Dumper! It attaches to your trailer hitch. If I weren't planning on being in populated areas so much, I might have got one (for obvious reasons, lol). Might still get one for times when I'm out in the middle of nowhere.

http://www.bumperdumper.com/bumper2.htm

In fact, it is the most difficult to solve the toilet problems

The Bumper Dumper is a hoot! With the hatch like on that SUV or the rear doors on a van open, it would be easy enough to add a privacy curtain of some sort like the soon to come Room-a-Long option.

Gadgets with catchy names can do very welll. Reminds me of the Sooper Dooper Pooper Scooper for following your pooch.

dig a hole squat over it and poop, then cover it up.

Joey: that's what ol' mister bear does in the woods but he's prolly got good knees.

I bought the green plastic seat that fits over a 5 gal bucket....tried cedar chips mixed w/ cat litter & cat litter alone...I didn't find that the cedar chips took care of the odor for repeat use and cat litter was VERY dusty when used inside a van...

What I use now and like best is newspapers.
First I sprinkle baking soda in the bottom of the empty bucket (mine is metal) line that w/ a tall kitchen bag & just pull the top of the bag over the outside of the can . Place a few layers of newspaper in the bottom of that bag, this is the emergency liner.
Then I place a walmart bag (or 2) in the can, making sure you get it to stay up over the can edge. Fold a double section of newspaper so you have 4 layers of paper,it makes a 12" square. Line the bottom of the walmart bag with those 4 layers.

After using the can (solids only) immediatly smoosh three 4 layer sections of newspaper firmly over your crap, being sure the papers cover up the entire bottom area of the bag. I make a quarter turn for each layer but that's just me. It seems to snug down better that way.
Close lid. cover entire can w/ an old quilt or rug...Open a couple windows for some cross breeze through the van for a few mins...
At this very moment my poop bag has been used 4 times and there is no odor in my van. Even when I open the lid to reuse the can. I find that the newspaper keeps the stink contained and if you do pee a little, the pee is less likely to condense on the under side of the lid (no surprises when you accidently lean against the underside of the lid!!

Before the crap bag gets too heavy, take it out and double or tripple bag it into more walmart bags & toss it into a dumpster or Rest Area trash can. folks put dog crap in those, right?
If you have friends/relatives who allow you to put a bag w/ theirs on trash days, that's another option for disposal.

the 5 gal bucket is the way to go.

the seat cover is for sissy's.

maybe in july and august i'll have a different opinion -lol

When I was in AZ. at the RTR, I put 4 trash bags in my bucket, each inside the other. Then I put about 2 hand fulls of cat litter in. After that I did my thing. I had a Luggable-Loo. I had no problem with odor. The thing to do,if your in a group,is to leave it outside. I pooed in it in the van,for privacy, then set it outside. With 4 trash bags, and keeping it outside,it never smelled bad. I didn't have to dump it but every 2 weeks. The more bags you put in,the more capacity it can hold.

I tried the kitty litter, and since I was mostly doing number 1, it got used up WAY too fast. Plus, the bucket was way in the way! I try to do number 2s in public restrooms, and pee into an orange Nalgene. You can't even tell it's pee in there, until you pour it out (into a public toilet).

I had a "Luggable Loo" and found it to be adequate, but then I found a much better alternative. They are called "Gamma Lids" and they are a two piece air tight lid that snaps onto the top of any bucket. They are much more heavy duty than the Luggable Loo and they are "air tight" once they are sealed. Not quite as comfortable to sit on as the Loo, but comfortable enough.

http://www.amazon.com/Gamma-Seal-Li...1368233698&sr=8-1&keywords=bucket+lid

I keep a 5 gallon bucket and inside is a roll of TP, an empty oil jug for #1, a bottle of hand sanitizer, roll of cheap plastic garbage bags and bag of absorbant "Animal Bedding" that I picked up a Pet Store and a spray can of Pure Citrus Lemon. The bucket stays in my van and has saved me a few times.

I would be located in big cities, which is NOT ideal for using public restrooms. I was thoroughly disappointed with how hard it was to find a decently clean public toilet in even the suburbs of Los Angeles (I had to resort to using Kohls bathrooms the short time I was cardwelling in L.A. earlier this year.)

This is the one thing that I miss with not getting a class B RV. At least with those RVs, there is a separate area where the sewer hose is stored, and all you have to mess with is a sewer outlet. It's much nastier IMO dumping a portable flush toilet.

I could consider using a bucket toilet, but #1: where would I dump it? Park trash cans? #2: whats the chance that the bucket could tip over and *ahem* make a huge mess? I would have to have a way of securing it.

scoup of litter in plastic bag, bag in 5 gallon bucket, sit and sh!t, close bag, bag into trash, all cleaned up.
Pi$$ in laundry jug or urinal, cap and dump latter.

Public toilets, big box stores are usually best. I carry small pack of Wet Ones, antibacterial. Clean things up first. And me up after.

If I had the bux and space I'd get a decent aerobic composting toilet but, barring that, my Thetford Porta-Potti pretty much rulez. 5 gallon capacity, sealed, and easy to dump. When in the hills I use a piss-jug and save the turds for the porta-pot; can go quite a while before having to dump it. ..Willy.

I live in my truck with a large extended cab. I sleep in that back seat. I've filled in the foot area with extra blankets, etc so the whole area is my bed. My first choice is to use public bathrooms as much as possible. Grocery stores, the library are the cleanest, also coffee shops. For other times, I use a 2 gallon bucket in my bed area. That's it. To pee, I squat/sit on it. No seat. I do like the idea of pipe insulation on the rim, but I'm trying to be stealth & I move the bucket to the back of the truck during the day. Anyway, in the morning I pour it into a drink cup to dump in a toilet. Or if I can not be noticed, I dump in the dirt/rocks, out of the way. For #2, I use 2 plastic bags and litter or newspaper or dirt, whatever is available. I tie it up, bag it again, toss it in a public garbage can that's away from where people might be loitering!
I don't have odor because I empty right away, except for peeing at night. I've not had any trouble with the bucket tipping, I think because it is small. I know this wouldn't work for everyone. I'm small and nimble with strong legs! It is a good workout and women are used to squatting over public toilets to pee anyway!
