Haven't been on here for quite a bit, lots of things changed. Living in Michigan with a rear wheel drive conversion van as a primary vehicle while trying to fix it up was crappy. I got stuck in a freezing rain storm on the highway and spun 3x's last winter. So...I sold it for a 4wd Jeep Cherokee. And I have to say I love my Jeep!
Even though I thought living in a van would be ideal for me, I found that having a 4wd vehicle with a trailer/camper would work better for me especially when camping in the boonies
Now I'm saving for a small travel trailer, not sure if a pop up is a good idea.
Does anyone have an opinion on how pop up campers hold up in cooler weather or rain? Is it true that they tend to break a lot?
Thanks again for this awesome site and all the great info!!!!!!!

Hi & Welcome back. I did extensive research into popups before I bought. My main reason for wanting to get one was gas mileage. In the end the amount of work required to set one up was more than what I'd save in gas. Weather wasn't too much of a factor since I had no plans to leave the southwest. That being said I tested setting a couple different popups and hated it under perfect weather conditions. That was what made me go the route of getting a travel trailer instead.

I'm pulling a Sportsman Classic 16BH in my Honda Ridgeline 4x4 and love it!

I remember my dad trying to put up our pop top in a windstorm. He was normally the quiet type, but I learned a few new words that day. I never had the urge for a pop top.

I'd second going for a small TT. Canvas and screen/plastic windows are not great insulators.
Lol @ Seraphim!! That's a funny story
thanks guys! My gut was saying travel trailer but the gas mileage was saying pop up. I didn't really think about setting it up in a wind storm or even rain, duh. Makes sense though!

I hauled a pop up for years and loved it, but I wasn't living, full-time, in it. When I pondered what I wanted and what I was willing to settle for a pop up was at the bottom of the list. As other's mentioned, the set up was a pain. Storage would be another. Also, although some of them come with heat and AC there's no way to insulate to conserve either.

Camped in colorado in the snow in a pop up. That was okay but try putting one up or taking it down in the rain, sleet and snow. I do not like pop ups. I like to be able to go straight into the vehicle or travel trailer. Just think of driving all day, can't find a place til night and the weather is bad.
It you are worried about weight, it may suprise you what a small tt can weigh compared to a pop up. Not a lot of difference. There is more wind resistance though.
Google Boler trailer. The best lightweight fibreglass trailer ever made. Here in Ontario the old models run about $4,000. Very hard to find. www.kijiji.ca

I looked in one place, daily, for light weight travel trailers. Who over operates this site must have a program that searches the web and pulls all the ads form everywhere. the ads also show if the rig has been sold.

http://www.fiberglass-rv-4sale.com/rv-for-sale

The left sidebar lists the most recent ads.

Boler and Bigfoots are not common in the USA. Depending on where you are in Michigan, though, it may be worth the ride north to check them out.
