Triple-jolt bear spray!
Many people try to run, which is probably the worst thing you can do.
From the Federal Wildlife Service: "Never run from a bear: A bear can run 50 yards in 3 seconds, or up to 40 mph, faster than a race horse for short distances, and faster than any human, uphill or downhill. Running away will only encourage the bear to chase you."
I've asked two mail carriers if they've ever had to use it on dogs, and both said they had. Then I asked if they had noticed any 'beneficial effect' the next time they saw the dogs. Four of the five dogs they had sprayed (total) seemed wary of them afterward, and didn't charge them, although one would bark from the porch. The fifth wasn't seen again by the carrier, due to being shot by police over the weekend.
