My 2005 Ford Explorer has an issue of running down the battery when the vehicle is not used for a long period of time.

So I installed a maintainer so I know the battery will start the engine.  Question - Is it ok to run small things with the inverter while the maintainer is plugged in?

As long as you don't run the battery too low, there is no issue whatsoever with plugging in small things while the maintainer is charging the battery.

Thank you Canine.  I've been worried heat would build up, or the battery would be adversely affected.
Seems a sneaky way to get shore power to the rig. :s  Max

By small things you are limited to charging a phone at the most.  Just running an inverter with no load is probably enough to consume what the maintainer gives.

Yes for significant loads you need to get a proper charger.
