Hello fellow 'dwellers

I recently ran into an issue with gettin' some rubber mounted up for my ride. I went to my "local" tiire guy 'cause he is reasonable/fair on the tire work. Like most of us , we have to watch our "budget", money's tight. So I asked him to mount up a tire and swap it on my spare tire rim and he "informed" me that he couldn't mount that tire because it was older than 6 years old.....Huh?????? i'm lookin' at him like he was smokin' somethin' really good! Maybe he was just jokin' with me....NOT!! Come to find out that our"gov't has made a law restricting the use of "used tires" for re-use and require tire shops, law inforcement,ect.. to inforce this. I understand that there should be reasonable safety provisions in place BUT....the tire i was wanting to get mounted was "brand new"!!
It was a spare tire was was covered it's whole life, no dry rot, aging, ect....I even told him that i would sign a release form(waiver) to release him of liability of any safety issues.....NOPE ..he said!
I try to save money wherever/whenever possible. I certainly wouldnt sacrifice a dollar over safety! I wouldn't put on "bad " tires on, especially since I commute on them on the highway!! I used to "work " in the automotive/tire industry so i know what a "good " tire looks like. The gov't is getting pretty ridiculous on matters of our daily lives. Not all of us can afford to buy "new" tires whenever needed! So i am buying my own tire equipment to install my "rubber" as i need to....everything I need , i can get at "Harbor Freight".
I am fortunate that I am from the "old school" of being taught how to do these types of things. Most people aren't as capable nor have the time to do it. Their goin' tell us next that there is a "expiration" on toilet paper!!!!
Oh well, sorry. I had to rant alittle over this.
                                                                                   Thanks!
                                                                                    Randy
I guess that I should have read thru all the posts as someone has already posted about this........SORRY EVERONE! been a long day!!

Randy there is a lot of good information out there for you to look at when you have time...here is one article that explains a lot of what is going on.

http://thesafetyrecord.safetyresearch.net/2010/11/18/tire-age-issue-still-languishing-in-us/

The gummint may have gotten off the stool and passed some law, I don't know.

As a fleet mechanic in Alaska I saw many tires develop cracking like weather checking, in an enclosed building after a year or so of storage....it is really bad there...it is something to do with ozone levels or something and the way it attacks the material they are made of. I personally believe that tire life has shortened with the use of newer, cheaper materials in the rubber.

Good luck with proceeding....
Bri

Mornin' Bri ,

Thanks for finding that info for me, appreciate it!

                                                                                          Randy

You you might need to do a road trip to the country counties where the govment is not taken too kindly too.

https://vanlivingforum.com/post/Tire-Age-6122079

And read the above thread and links.

But inspect those tires , and stress them before youdrive too far. Else you might have a surprise blowout on the road

Got your back Randy...LOL
Bri

+ 1 on what Offroad said about the back road counties. Plenty of used tires out there in fly-over country and people who'll happily mount them.
