I visited the last plantation in Florida today. That's to say, the last standing home from the days of slavery and plantations in Florida, the Gamble Mansion and Plantation in Ellenton.
The Gamble House State Park sits on 16 remaining acres of what was once a 3600 acre sugar plantation. Built over a period of 5 years, starting in 1842, near the end of the Seminal Indian Wars. The Gamble House remains an outstanding example of Greek revival architecture, a beautiful mansion built in an extremely harsh environment considering the times. There were still occasional attacks by indians, the vegetation was extremely dense, mosquitos were everywhere, and of course, one had to deal with the hot muggy Florida weather, at a time long before air conditioners!
As I toured the mansion and its grounds, I thought, 'wow… what an amazing achievement,' which it was…. but then I remembered that Major Gamble, who built the mansion, had forced labor from 40 slaves brought to the plantation from his childhood home near Tallahassee. I imagined how difficult the life of a slave must have been in 1842 and I'm sure I have no idea the horror slaves experienced! How could this have happened anywhere much less here in America? Not wanting to over simplify the causes of slavery, I quickly concluded that at the time, 1842, slavery in the American South and in other parts of the world was considered "normal." Then I started to think about "what is normal?"
To many of my friends, living most of the year in a small RV like I have done for the last 3 years, is certainly not considered "normal." So to my vehicle-dwelling friends, don't worry too much about what society considers "normal." Remember that "normal" is not always correct, as is the case with slavery! Enjoy all the freedom a "vehicle dwelling life" allows and stop worrying about being "normal."

Slavery has existed for thousands of years and continues to exist to this day. Slavery is bad, and evil in the extreme but there is nothing new under the sun.

If you work your a wage slave to somebody or to quote Marilyn Manson "everybody is somebody else's ******"

To me, 'normal' is external pressure imposed by society to do what is expected. When I was married, I constantly got the whole, "When are you having kids?' schtick from all sides, despite the fact that neither my husband nor I wanted children. When I made that choice clear to the person asking, I usually got the 'You'll change your mind' routine. It actually creeped me out, because it was usually said in that Borg 'Resistance is futile' tone of voice.

M*A*S*H's Frank Burns said it best (Season 2, Episode 22):

Frank: The man is not normal!
Hawkeye: What's normal, Frank?
Frank: Normal is everybody doing the same thing.
Trapper: What about individuality?
Frank: Well, individuality is fine--as long as we all do it together.

Yeah, no thanks. I'd rather be 'that weirdo in the van' :D

Normal is just average. I think I'm above it.

Back in my hippie/radical days, we all dressed pretty much alike, wore our hair the same, spoke the same language. Maybe we weren't 'normal' by the standards of society at large but we certainly conformed to our own 'norm'. ;)

Wanting to be part of a group is normal for us. We are social apes and it is our nature. It's a genetic. Very few of us can escape it. I suppose that those who do would be abnormal. We advertise what group we are in thru clothing, hair, jewelry and symbols that we choose for that purpose. We know instinctively that this is so. Those who are most insistent about demanding not to be judged on appearances not only diligently arrange their own appearance to convey their "rebel" group membership, but consistently make instant judgments about others based on appearance.

In otherwords turtle "if you want to be a non-conformist you gotta look and dress like us!" I gave up the 14 inch Mohawk a long time ago, but it was polarizing, cool people complemented me (it took a lot of work to keep it erect!) lame people scoffed, demanded to take my picture, or just made rude comments... It really did help to separate the chaff.

There is no normal.

Very... Wasn't the whitehouse or Capitol building started with slave labor and finished by free men after the civil war?

I had a conversation with a group of my five closest friends on my (two days ago) trip to NY that relates perfectly to this conversation. Two Italians, one Cuban, one black, and one Jewish. They remarked that I was the only one in the room that would be considered acceptable by the skin head racist group. When it comes down to it, if I was to look at the life my ancestors lived, slave owners on my Mothers side, Germans on my fathers, I should feel the most guilt. Normal depends on who is defining it. We are lucky to live in a time where discrimination is considered wrong by the majority of the population and we can associate with whoever we choose.

HA!!!

I build and ride choppers, and this sure makes me think of alot of the 'bikers' I see & know. All are more then happy to show off their 'individuality' by wearing what all the other Harley riders are.

Look at a Harley advertisement. All they talk about is "Freedom & Individuality".......pfffffffffffff.....whatever!!!
(silly me...and here I always thought it was supposed to be about riding motorcycles!!) :D

Be 'NORMAL'....be yourself! :)

I can't find the exact exerpt, so I'll describe it here. In Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea's Illuminatus trilogy, there is an organization described as trying to find and recruit normal people; a competing group trying to do the same with abnormal people.

Both groups had very paltry membership rates.

No many want to be described as "normal," and when you dig into it with a person -- any person -- you'll find freak somewhere. Likewise, since everyone has their own freakitude, abnormal is very subjective and hard to find.

It's more like a spectrum, normal on one end and abnormal on the other -- most people fit somewhere along the line and the very ends are completely undefined and subjective.

Since about 1975, when someone would ask me, "Wouldn't you prefer to be normal?" I'd scoff and say, "Normal?! Normal is just an average! I like to think of myself as above average! Don't ask me to lower myself to 'normal'! " Not that I actually look down on the Norm. I just refuse to be pressured into conformity. If I conform in any way, it's because I choose to do so, not because some pipsqueak wants to put social pressure on me to be "just like everybody else!"! My two pennies worth!
