Hello
noob from so cal. i'm here doing a lot of research on this life style before I jump in and get the bomb dropped on me :D :p . it seems to me that more and more people are adopting this lifestyle weather it be the older generation and retired or the younger generation. I have always wanted the freedom of the road

ok so i'm prepping to get into this lifestyle ;) . I have 5 years to plan what are some of the things that you wish that you had done before you got into it

Started sooner.

Wish I never quit it!!

I did it for 14 years and then came back to live in a S&B for almost 8 years.

What is going to take 5 years of planning - perhaps we can suggest some things that will shorten that time frame!

my wife has cancer and a tumor in her back that could wind up paralyzing her. i don't know where i got the 5 year thing from but it could be sooner or longer before she goes as she's not in good health to be living this life style. so i told myself that id'e hold off till afer she's gone before i do this!!

My sincere sympathy to both you and your wife!

I can understand having to delay.

I asked because too often people come here with a 'x year plan' because they think that it will take that much time to be debt free or save enough for their dream vehicle. We can often show them much quicker ways to achieve their main aim.

Quick note on using the quote system here - the cursor ends up inside the quote. If you move the cursor to outside the quote box, then what you type is separate. It's all set up also so that only the newest typing can be quoted (not a quoted portion of the post) - it prevents quotes inside of quotes inside of quotes but it also meant that I couldn't quote you on this post.

Under the circumstances, perhaps you can do some short trips with your wife to some pretty spots as long as she's able.

The most important things for someone wanting this minimalistic lifestyle is to be out of debt - it's a task master that is best thrown off. That and spend some time examining all the different modes of vehicle dwelling - we all have different needs and wants so there's multiple ways of achieving the lifestyle.

welcome, darude,
You'll find info on almost ANY kind of transportation one can live in here, so you can do tons of research.

Any idea what general type you'd like best? Or where you want to travel or camp when you go mobile?

thanks for the sympathy!!
it sucks having to delay but it is what it is. i don't know why i said the 5 year plan thing i don't. but from me and my wifes convo last night we could be starting as soon as next sept :) . i am looking at newer vans ans i don't want something that's a rust bucket and looks all ghetto :D  as well as we want to be DEBT free!! though it doesn't take a lot of money to get started in this lifestyle though it would also be good to have a nice bank account built up also!!
