Gotta watch it though, cuz some of them are galvanized and when heated hot enough will put off zinc fumes.. which can kill ya dead. ..Willy.

Also noticed the stovepipe they are selling is galvanized. Not a good thing. Get black stove pipe from Lowes/HD or a stove store if it's a weird size.

find it scary that these "hack" devices are being sold in any context. Galvanized is poisenous. Smoke-Monoxide leaking is poisenous. Colapse breakage fire hazard is high.

Only buy devices designed well, that have been reviewed for a couple years for safety. Never buy half engineered devices.

I have seen pictures of rvs with wood stoves(not made from ammo cans). Should be possible with proper precautions.
Obviously would have to address chances of toxic fumes and the Fire hazard of having burning hot metal and floating embers etc. surrounded by flammable materials like bedding.

Actually now that I think back it was a very small pot belly stove in the corner of a box truck or something along those lines. There was nothing else flammable anywhere near it.

I would also be concerned about what would happen with ventilation when traveling down the road. I could imagine smoke and fumes filling the living area with the ventilation pipes in the wrong area.

Back in the Hippy 60's I remember all kinds of vans with contraptions. One had a small cast iron wood stove. Even with all the doors open you couldn't stay in the van. Anyway think of all that long hair that was flamible.

You should also look into the legality of having one in a motor vehicle. Just think; going to fill up with gas and the fire isn't out..
I'm not saying this would happen, but legislators might have taken that scenario into account. Also, were there to be a fire and your vehicle gutted (or it spreads), your insurance might be null 'n void if they find you were using a wood stove. Even if it wasn't the cause, its' presence as a heat source could cause problems. ..Willy.

This guy builds a wood burning store from recycled drink cans and a small beer keg.

I think is pretty innovative, I would think if you are staying in a van you would be pretty cautious about setting yourself on fire.

There may come a time where the only way to get heat would be to burn wood or twigs.

Putz

I've seen some pretty skookum wood stoves made from 20-50lb propane bottles. The steel is pretty thick and the rounded/curved shape means no walls popping on the stove. My buddy had one that was made from a 20lb tank and it was pretty sweet. Either use a new tank or flush out an old one really well prior to cutting/welding. ..Willy.

On the one hand, I echo the concern of folks who note that a badly constructed wood stove, or one constructed of wrong materials, can be deadly.

On the other hand, think of all the gypsy vardos and sheep wagons that were powered by wood stove. There are some tiny ones that I think would be lovely in a van (assuming proper installation), just like they are great in a marine setting. Don't have to be the $1000 models, either.

Just MO.

M.A.

We used to make stoves akin to the ammo box stoves for fish houses in the winter.
We also made a fuel oil stove out of a piece of drive shaft cut & welded at a 90 degree angle in two places. In the shape of the letter "C" stood on its side. We put stove pipe on one end to vent out the roof of the fish house. Drilled a small hole in the other end about an inch from the top to hold the drip line from the tank.
It dripped fuel in the bottom of the stove and kept the fire going. just used a valve to regulate the fuel & thus the heat. It wasn't something you'd want to leave going while you slept but worked well for a fish house.
