I don't know about other states but Ohio has a program for motorcyclist where quiet back roads are laid out for day trips that are scenic and don't have lots of traffic. A lot of people take their older shut-in's for a car tour on these roads in nice weather as an outing.

Some states also have a Scenic Byways program, which sounds similar.

Thanks for posting. I didn't know that my own state (Illinois) has seven national scenic byways. I only knew of one. From the link below:

"The National Scenic Byways Program, established by Congress in 1991, recognizes historic, scenic, and culturally important roads, all of which promote economic development and tourism in communities around the U.S. There are more than 1,200 byways in all 50 states."
