Hi, my name is Luke, and I have been living out of my Ford Explorer for the last year or so. Sometime in early 2014 I dropped out of college instead of going into debt, and got the crazy idea that I could live a life not chained down to an apartment lease and soul sucking job.

Fast forward to today, and I am living in the employee provided dorms of a non-profit lodge in the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire, saving up more money than I ever had in my life. November 11th is my self-appointed quit date, after which I will be heading to a warmer climate for the winter.

I have acquired practical knowledge of stealth camping, evading police harassment, extreme frugal budgeting, and other skills important for a vagabond lifestyle. Feel free to ask me questions.

Welcome to the CRVL forums USExplorer! Where are you headed - Florida, Arizona or some other warm spot?

To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips & Tricks" post lists some helpful information to get you started. We look forward to hearing more from you.

Thanks for the link, Mr L. I've worked on golf courses before, so I can generally get the job if there is an opening. However, since I spent all summer working and saving, I feel like bumming around or volunteering for a few weeks.

Last winter I lived in an off the grid cabin in the North Carolina Piedmont, hung out with a Rainbow family in the Florida Panhandle and volunteered on an organic farm in the Alabama Black Belt. Oh, and worked third shift at Walmart for 75 days. Good times.

I noticed y'all have a gathering in Quartzsite Arizona, maybe I'll show up by January, if I don't get snagged in any states along the way. It'd be my first time out West.

You should do that. Many of us will be in attendance!

Hi Luke!

Welcome to the board. Sounds like you'll fit in without any difficulty.

Yes, you need to come out West. (this is where the friendly folks live!) :D

Hello form the Oregon Coastline!

Welcome Luke,

There are Free Universities.   You may still have to work and make some of your own money while attending.

The Military supports these:

United States Coast Guard Academy (and other Military Colleges)

Location: New London, Conn. Tuition price: Free
Value: $98,200 per year
How they do it: The Coast Guard Academy is funded through the government.
Others like it: The Coast Guard Academy, along with the four other federally funded service institutions -- The U.S. Naval Academy, the Merchant Marine Academy, the Air Force Academy and the Military Academy -- all provide free tuition, though some require students to pay certain fees. After graduation, Coast Guard grads are required to serve for at least five years. Service requirements at other academies range from five to eight years .

The Merchant Marine may be of interest.  It can take you far and wide with a comfortable living once you've graduated.  (should you be interested)  There are others mostly in the New England area.   You can PM me if you would like to know more.

I already had three years of college under my belt when I decided to drop out, so its not exactly like I'm stuck with a high school diploma. I could get a scholarship and go back to college for free if I so desire, but the poor quality of instruction at a vaunted and high-priced four year state institution that I attended for two semesters seriously turned me off to finishing my degree in B.S. I much prefer the real world.

I also do not like incurring debts or long term obligations, which is why I declined offers of free tuition from the Guard or other government organizations. It could also be why I am single and rootless. ;)
