Bob -- thought you might want to know some van dwellers who were traveling in their pickup camper met with accident yesterday. They are Scott and Terri  who along with Caravan Carolyn and Pandamonium and a fellow by name of James were together traveling from Washington State to Arizona when a U Haul truck hit them in the back totaling their camper and possibly their truck.  It was a hit and run but he was chased by Caravan Carolyn and apprehended.  Just thought you might want to know this and maybe address this on a future vlog.  For more info you can check Caravan Carolyns You Tube Channel-----thanksso much   Jenny J

Here's the video, at least what there is of it. Carolyn had her video off when the accident happened. And she apparently also didn't have it on when she ran down the perp who hit them. She keeps saying that we won't believe what happened. Not only did she not tape anything of value, but she also even failed to TELL what happened. Somebody hit their camper. However, she did make a mess of her own rig inside, when she made a fast U-turn (yawn). It's basically eleven minutes of her telling us that we won't believe it. You can skip the viewing and do something interesting with the time you would waste watching it. You could wash dishes.

If you want to see a more full picture of the damage, here's DestinationOpenRoad (Scott & Terri)'s video:

Address what? That there was a hit and run and some people lost their camper and truck? Or do you mean Bob might get a fundraising going to replace their rig?

I would think that; with it being a hit and run, the guy being caught, everyone having some kind of insurance, (and possibly that the guy was driving a Uhaul???? --- not sure how they could be accountable) that at least a large portion of the money to replace their rig would be taken care of ...

I also saw this on Panda's channel. Pretty bad, Scott and Teri were lucky they weren't hurt worse. I'm glad that Carolyn took off to follow him, otherwise he might have gotten away. Have some compassion folks they were on the way to Lake Havasue for the van build.

Sorry but I saw the video and the damage was horrible.

Bob has a great presence in the van dwelling community
I was not asking he start any kind of fund but simply asking that he
address situations such as this -- not necessarily this situation but any situation
 The accident wasnt their fault
it could happen to anyone of us
Their Truck and camper is their home
They are in unfamiliar surroundings thousands of miles from home
Insurance companies take time
but what do you do in the interim?
What would you do in similar situation?

Dealing with incidents appropriately is difficult but crucial not to mention complex. A forum specifically for such items is one idea. Effective legal response from lay people is de facto a political activity. I think this group is up to it so long as things are results focused.

If the insurance coverage is from the owner's own collision coverage, it will usually be limited to the blue book value of the vehicles which would be very low for older vehicles.  Is this also how it works for trailers and campers?

I had a comprehensive claim after hitting a rock that slid from the hill on the side of a road a couple years ago with my 2005 subaru forester.  The rock caused extensive damage to the exhaust system though fortunately was limited to that.  The total repair estimate on my then 10 year old subaru was $5400 and the insurance adjuster said he would have totaled the vehicle had the cost been $1000 higher.  Fortunately, my comprehensive deductible was only $100 and a comprehensive claim in considered no fault so did not affect my insurance cost.

On the other hand, the coverage should be from the other driver's liability insurance if they were at fault (which presumably is the case in this situation with a hit and run).  Getting the other driver's insurance to pay for cost of replacement could be difficult though so consulting a lawyer is probably a good idea, especially since she was injured.  The recovery for the injuries and pain and suffering could easily exceed the amount for the damaged vehicle.

Is there any way that Scott and Terri could advertise for a copy of the accident? Lots of people have dash cams (turned on), and may have seen/taped it. But how would this be done? W/o a video, it's just their word against the idiot's.

This is sad news. What makes it worse is that is thier home. Where are they staying now?hopefully everything works out. I will be praying for them.

Losing my high value low blue book vehicle to an idiot, or a deer, is my biggest fear.
