It all depends on your needs. If you are going to be pulling a wagon behind you a V8 of any age is going to work pretty well. My 6cyl has a towing capacity of 7600lbs, so a newer model vehicle with a 6 cyl would work as well or better than an older model V8. A home built camper van without a tow is nowhere close to being overloaded. My 2500 with a 6 has a 3200lb cargo limit. A person would have to work pretty hard to get 3200 pounds in the box. I think a lot of us are going by older information. In 1988 a 4.3 Chevy van engine produced 150 HP with 230 torque compared to 276 HP and 298 torque for the same engine today. 276 HP, those are V8 numbers.
