Not really IMO. Momentum gets you through. You get slow and hung up and your rolling backward with front brakes locked or get hung on a tree or rut. Or you have to turn sharp and roll it.... If you can get it to turn before going 10ft into a tree.

There's just no safe way to go about a quad in woods and hills unless well developed and very mild to me. It's not a matter of IF but a matter of when.

Well said HDR
Bardo , just go a different route.

I always used to get crap for falling behind ,,,,by the ones that just fell.

well then we need to agree to disagree. how do you get momentum without speed? going uphill momentum doesn't get you far. in soft sand momentum doesn't get you far. if you are going slow I don't see how you can roll it with a sharp turn? again by going slow my momentum will not take me 10 feet into a tree. I think your definition of slow and mine are two different things. let me explain something, my ATV has 5 forward gears and a 3 speed gear reduction box, between 2wd and 4wd and diff lock I have a choice of 35 forward gears. in the lowest gear the ATV will climb a brick wall but top speed is 1-2 mph. I have pulled 2 1/2 ton trucks with it.

a 4wheel is more stable than a 2 wheeler. a 4wheeler will stand up on its own a bike won't. this simple fact makes driving though soft sand easy.

if a bike is right for you that's great. but IMO a 4wheeler is much safer. all my buddies that used to ride dirt bikes now ride 4wheelers except one. he says we are a bunch of old men and you know what he's right. highdesertranger

Anyone that likes a particular brand and why?

the big three all make decent ATV's, Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki. what I find annoy is they all are pushing bigger displacement engines and more doo dads. I prefer the smaller simpler ATV's. highdesertranger

Thanks HDR. I'll find a big dealer and go look. Gotta remember - no doo dads

Somehow I posted this in the Tools thread, or the computer changed it for me.

Anyway, posting it here where it should be posted:

A little Honda Ruckus or something similar mounted on a hitch rack would be doable....yes it's 2 wheels, but a very DOCILE 2 wheeler. And being a street legal 49cc moped or scooter means that in most states its a very minimal license endorsement needed, if at all, and you can legally ride it on any street other than an Interstate Highway.

That Ruckus is pretty cute and would be convenient but I don't see a pink one. Just kidding!

I really want four wheels though as I plan to use it mostly off road and I've had a bad leg injury and don't move as fast as I used to.

How would a Ruckus do off road? Do they have off road tires?

Its fine on more or less level dirt trails, at 20 mph, but its not a motocross bike...its a 49cc scooter. But it has room to haul a bag of groceries and run to the post office or whatever.

Fine for campground travel.

Exploring rocky trails, or traveling 200 miles...um....no.

I want to explore rocky trails!!!!!

I have done so much of that. Usually in a Jeep, or 4x4 Pickup. My favorite all time off road vehicle was my little Suzuki Samurai. Think miniature jeep, as it wasn't much bigger than a golf cart, but very capable.
The beauty of these is they can also be flat towed.
Here's a photo of it before I modded it. It could go anywhere my friends Jeep could, but use half the fuel getting there.

You think that's nuts cool?  She and a buddy drove a 3 wheeled tuk tuk from Bangkok, Thailand to Brighton, UK; some 12,500 miles . . .

I saw an add on tv just now and they were advertising a store in Newburgh IN (not real far) that sells 4 wheelers. They spanned the store with the camera and I noticed many said "Polaris". Is that a decent brand?

They're OK I guess. I've heard more than one complaint about them in the past, but it happens. (ask Gunny) I like Honda, Suzuki, and Yamaha. They all seem mostly reliable, but then again, "stuff" can happen to any of them.
