This isn't a hobby but I couldn't find anyplace else to ask.

I'm sorta entertaining the idea of bringing a four wheeler with me. I have one presently but it's old as dirt and I just use it to putter around here at the farm.

Anyway, I'm thinking about maybe buying a small new one and really am not up to date with the different models or uses. I'd like to keep it small because of extra weight and ease of use.

I'd hate to have to tow anything but can't think of any other way. If I have to get a trailer I thought maybe one of those one wheel swivel things? I don't know what they are called.

Anyway, I'd like to hear the pros and cons of different 4wheelers and ideas about the best way to bring one with me. I do have a tiny cargo trailer but don't want to have to deal with that.

Thanks everyone

A quick search shows the smallest Honda ATV at 262 pounds...90cc motor....not much power.
Next up was the 250cc model at 384 pounds.

The 'sport' models are lighter than the 'work/trail' models.

A properly sized hitch carrier and vehicle could carry one.

(Personally, I'd prefer a trailer)

That's a lot of weight suspended in air back there!

I love my quad/4wheeler/atv whatever you want to call it.  it greatly expand my exploration area.  it gets excellent fuel economy,  about 45 mpg off road.  most of the small towns I am around don't care if you ride into town,  in fact most welcome it.  most of the locals use them for around town transport.  here's a few pics,

Eastern Oregon,  the red and black rocks on the road is obsidian.  I got some beautiful banded samples from here.

Northern Nevada,  Scout and I are watching some feral horses.

Eastern California,  waiting for the storm. notice the metal detector on the handle bars.

yes I think an ATV is a highly useful tool.  highdesertranger

Great pics HDR. A lab? That's the best dog I ever had.

What kind and how big is your quad? You have a big trailer don't you? How do u keep it secure?

Your quad seems pretty big. The big reason I want a smaller one is to be able to power it around if I need to.

actually for a 4 wheel drive it's pretty small. it's a 300. but it weighs almost 600 lbs. it's a 1998 Suzuki King Quad and I have 2 of them and an old Honda Forman. I have several trailers at the moment the one I use most is my home made off road trailer it's about a 6x10. by secure do you mean for travel or for thieves. highdesertranger

They are fun, can get pretty much anywhere...go through any weather..rain sun snow.

Only cons would be additional engine to feed and maintain. May not be a difference to you. Trailer or truck bed. I wouldn't trust that on a hitch carrier, unless it was a dirtbike or lughtweight baby sized atv.

For thieves. I live in a place where locking your doors to your house is optional. Locking doors to car, well there may be someone that does it but I don't know anyone. My keys are left in my car permanently so I don't lose them. Same with the RV.

I have a lot of good habits I'm going to have to break.

HDR, so u recommend a 4wd quad? I didn't know there was such a thing. Any particular brand to look at? New/used? I'm a bit paranoid about used. They are out mudding with them everywhere around here.

Bardo, I don't want a dirt bike. I had a motorcycle when I was 17 and it took forever to scrape the road out of my arm. I'm not what I once was and have had around 16 broken bones from a myriad of weird accidents. I would just feel safer with 4 wheels under me. I don't go fast anymore either. Thanks

Trailer well crap. Anyone ever use one of those trailers with the swivel wheel? The benefit is that the way it attaches you don't have to worry about the way it follows or the backing up thing. I see I'm going to have to find a video because my explanation sucks.

That's it exactly OP! Thanks! It's 3:16 AM. I guess you sleep as well as I do. [emoji31]

I usually average six to seven hours a night.

Early to Bed, Early to Rise, my ass!   It hasn't made me any healthier, it sure hasn't made me any richer, and as for wiser, well, not according to my family!

I'd give anything for seven hours of sleep! My brain sure suffers from it. I guess I should mosey into the kitchen and make a cup of coffee since I can't close my eyes.

That tiny wheel/tire makes me nervous.

Whaaaa? What? With a name like "Caution to the Wind" you get nervous?

Shall I send you a Valium?

Pretend, it's nearly golf cart size tire flying down the road ~70 mph. No thank you.  :p

I think they have different tire sizes for the different size trailers?

I always did want my golf cart to go a lot faster...
