Am reading an AMA about a young man who travels the world on $50 a day. He wrote a book and is now on REDDIT talking about his experience with others.

It seems to be the magic budget number. About $20,000 a year and you can do pretty good while getting around anywhere on this planet. USA included. Am thinking that a couple could so it on $30,000 a year, given the sharing. Of course this is assuming no kids.

Point is this seems to be the magic cost per year. Some do it better with more style and grace and beauty at as low as $10,000 a year. But that's after you get really efficient. Plus it's good to live off only $10,000 while saving another $20,000 over two years to live on in your third year.

Two years working and one year off seems a good lifestyle. Maybe even sustainable on a minimum wage existence for a single person ? I speculate as not having done that.

i dont think you can save that much on min wage, but you could live on it. you only take home about 14k on 8 an hour.

So a key is to not find entry level jobs. Find a portable skill that pays more than minimum.

Those oil gate guard jobs for couples seem to pay a bit more than minimum wage ($12 an hour or so?) plus they provide you with water, camping spot and fuel.

I could see someone making that work and being able to save a bit.

Remembering the old days of AMy Dacyczan and the various frugal zealot newsletters. Many would tease that she lived so poorly with her family. She and husband retired with house paid early. Way more advanced than most. Matches the cheap RV living lifestyle well.

@offroad re: Amy Dacyczan

I borrowed the combined version of the 3 Tightwad Gazette books so many times from the library I finally bought my own copy. I figured if I used a book that much as a reference then I should just buy it (used of course :)) I like the ideas in her newsletters but what I really liked is that she explained her thinking that went into her ideas. Just copying somebodies idea doesn't necessarily make sense but if you understand the reasons behind the idea you can make adjustments for your own particular situation. I can't say enough good things about her book

I have some friends who live in their Class A half the year travelling, and they often do this. A couple years back their daughter got herself a smaller "A" and did it too.
Best job that the couple I know had was working a few months at a Forestry Department site. Free campsite with full hookups, access to the big shop area the rangers used, and they got to use a 6X6 amphibious vehicle (Coot 2) to run the trails and put up new trail signs. Also used the ranger's small PU Truck for town runs. And they could run the trails on their dual sport bikes for fun.
A riding buddy and I camped a couple days as their guests - great set up! They had the place to themselves. :cool:

You have any info on how to get a gig like that? We have dual sport Yamaha WR250R bikes and I would love to run trails.

I own the book, as well, and agree, matches the cheap living mentality very well. Awesome book!

No, they knew the ranger personally and did this gig a few times. As new trails get added in, they need the signs and other trail work done.
You could contact the rangers or forestry department where you are and ask if they have anything similar. The National Park Service might have something similar too.

Am reading complaints on an international discussion. $20k is way too much money to need per year. Most middle class make $15k per year in many other countries; but they do have free healthcare.
