How important is a spare tire

Oh, ok. I see the pic you just posted. Interesting....

How important is a spare tire

The spare is HUGE, and heavy. My rooftop is super lightweight fiberglass. I'm not sure what a Yakima basket is....Wouldn't it be unsafe to drive the van being so top-heavy?

How important is a spare tire

Yeah, I think a donut would be pretty unsafe. My van is really big. It's either no spare and call AAA to tow me, or suck it up and find a place to keep one.

How important is a spare tire

My van is a 1991 Ford, and was previously used as a state vehicle for patient transport. There was a wheelchair lift in the back and the back doors got a little abused. Also, with the positioning of the rear license plate and door handle, I'm not sure how a big, huge spare tire would be mounted...

How important is a spare tire

Thanks for all of your thoughts and ideas. You guys are right. I need to figure out a way to carry one with me.

My circumstances right now will keep me in or near town most of the time for a while. Cell phone coverage and waiting for AAA won't be an issue. But this is only temporary, I'll...

How important is a spare tire

It might seem like a ridiculous question, but I'm really wondering if I need to haul around this huge, heavy tire in my living space (I was planning to build a compartment under the bed in the rear of the van).

There is no tire mount on the front or back, or underneath. The mount is on...

    Getting on the road

I feel a lot better about this now.

I've decided to just think of this "move" as going into "travel mode" which I love, instead of "living in my van" which feels drastic and full of unknowns. Traveling is fun and easy for me, so looking at it like that feels way better.

I...

Question about the interior ceiling of my high top

Hi Guys-- Thanks for the ideas.

Yeah, my shell was just an open piece of fiberglass. I insulated it with 1/2 foam with foil-type stuff on one side, and then a 1 inch layer of polyester batting over that. It's much quieter now, and really insulated. I just need to find a ceiling material...

Question about the interior ceiling of my high top

Finally the fun begins.... I've finished gutting my van, and have started building my home.

I've just finished insulating the inner side of the high top, and am not quite sure what to use for the finished ceiling. Besides paneling, what are some other ideas?

Thanks!

    Getting on the road

Thanks everyone so much. Your words so helpful! Today I finished all of the gutting of my van's past life as a state wheel chair/patient transport vehicle, and next I get to start building my new home. The inspiration is bigger than the fears today. I know they will creep in again, but I can...

    Getting on the road

    Hi Everyone,

Since I was really young, I've had this dream to convert a van or bus and live a simple life full of adventure, travel and freedom. A week ago I finally went for it and bought a van-- a 1991 Ford high top that needs lots of love. I'm wondering some things:

How do I get...

    Bamboo floors

Wow... sounds pretty cold where you are :/

Actually wool is my other choice. I like your idea of both, putting a wool throw wood over hardwood.

Bamboo floors

Yea, I would definitely use the read stuff if I go that way. I'm also wondering if there's a difference in the effectiveness of insulation for sound and/or temperature with carpet vs. wood. I like the idea of wood because it's natural, looks beautiful and is easy to keep clean.

    Question about Portable Solar Panels

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm not sure which way I'll go. I just started my conversion, so I'm looking into all sorts of different options for things. These looked like a great idea, but it's true what you say about the downside....

    Bamboo floors

    Hi All~

I'm just about done with stripping the old stuff out of my 91 Ford, and I'm getting ready to put my new home together. I'd really like to have wood floors... like bamboo, or some other wood. Has anyone put real wood floors in? Any suggestions for me?

Thanks!

    Meet Bertha!

We met 3 days ago, and today she's mine~

1991 Ford, state-owned with only 98k miles. And she's a high top, which will be great. I named her Bertha.... she's a big, strong, sturdy mama that will keep me safe <img src="/images/boards/smilies/smile.gif" border="0"...
