    Going home

October blizzards can happen above 6000 feet. They are rare but can happen. The good news though is that they generally end and melt off within a couple of days. So my advice is to watch the forecast carefully, but if you happen to hit snow, just find a place to camp and wait a few days until...

How to pressurize my gravity feed water systems

Regarding the original question, the way to get flow is to create back pressure. And the way to create back pressure is to shape the pipe in the proper way. One of the reasons house plumbing has U shapes and sections that go straight downward is to create back pressure. On the input side this is...

Eye Glasses while on the Road

Many Target stores have optical. Turnaround is less than a week and they have discounted prices. They also have to meet certain standards or they can lose their spot in Target. I used them in Colorado and had a good experience.

Does your rig have a name?

I call mine the "White Star". It's a white fiberglass Space Craft fifth wheel. It's named after a spaceship in the show Babylon 5.

Probably not your typical cheap rvliving persons

I try to follow that rule when I'm traveling. I use "200 miles" instead of "two hours" though. 200 miles comes out to about 3 hours, so it's not that much different. But I try to not to camp too close to large cities, which often requires the whole 200 miles to get from one side of a city to the...

What? You're gonna live in a van? Weirdo.

Welcome. As far as solutions for tall people, you could consider a pop-up truck camper. I believe the the Four Wheel campers are about 6' 8" inside when they are popped up. You could also consider an A-Frame trailer, such as an A-Liner. The peak of an A-Liner is about 8'.

    Suggestions for first van?

Not that it changes your point, but most microchips (and other components such as screens) are made in Taiwan, South Korea, and Malaysia. China mostly takes the components from those countries and assembles them into products.

Stuck between a rock and crazy place

If you live in that type of market, it is definitely to your advantage to sell to the highest bidder and make them pay the costs. ;-) I know someone in Albuquerque recently that had an open house on Saturday and said that nobody was allowed to make bids until Monday, and had a stack of bids...

Stuck between a rock and crazy place

Definitely true. But also, if you sell retail you will pay closing costs, realtor commissions, and possibly required repairs. Those 3 things could be up to 10% of the value of the house.

Stuck between a rock and crazy place

Oh, just a random note for anyone who gets in the situation of needing to sell an out of code house... One option is to sell to a wholesaler. You know those irritating postcards you get that say "we buy ugly houses"? Those are wholesalers. Their entire job is to find crappy houses that are good...

    Hello all!

The home page of this website has sample budgets for $500 and $1000 per month living. That of course assumes you are debt free. I am personally planning to get by on $1575 a month, which includes a $470 truck payment, so debt free that would actually be $1105 a month. Once my truck is paid off...

Can solar panels be wired in parallel before series?

Thanks. (The reason I want to change it to series when I go MPPT is to lower the input amps, and also to be above the minimum charge voltage for more hours per day.)

Can solar panels be wired in parallel before series?

So, a scenario: I have four 290-watt solar panels. They are each roughly 29 volts at 10 amps. I would like to temporarily use a PWM controller for them. I already own an HQST 40-amp PWM. It will do 1200 watts into a 24 volt battery. My plan is to run two pairs of panels each in parallel, and...

How the other half does it....

I really like this post. It gives some perspective. My fifth wheel feels like an apartment to me. I actually feel funny calling it "camping" because of that, so I always put the word RV in front and call it "RV camping". As far as the original topic of the thread, when I saw the title I was...

    Colorado help

Hi. Welcome. Everything in Colorado within an hour of Denver is usually PACKED until labor day, especially to the west. I'd recommend going to Wyoming, Nebraska, or New Mexico until the summer rush is over, or go way farther west into the mountains. Once the summer rush is over (roughly the...

    Hi again!

Insurance. (One word answer to what you do while you're gone. If someone messes with your house or stuff, claim it on insurance.)

Has anyone gone through acclamation from warm to hot?

One of the things I love about Wyoming is the lack of bugs. There are mosquitoes for about a month per year, and miller moths, but other than that the bugs can't survive the winter so there aren't many.

Has anyone gone through acclamation from warm to hot?

The sweating and long term endurance takes at least a year to change. For some people it's two years. It's awesome that you made such major progress in 4 months though. I'm also a big guy. I'm 6'2" and over 270. I did karate roughly weekly for 8 years, and also slacked off because of covid. (My...

    Van Build Off Competition

Interesting event. Just want to say that I love Alamosa and Sand Dunes National Park. I spent about a month near there in 2019, in late September through late October. It does get chilly at night. In September it may be just above freezing. Also, you can get sand mixed with wind. That is exactly...

Has anyone gone through acclamation from warm to hot?

The best way to decrease sweat output is to get in shape. This does not necessarily mean losing weight (though it's a natural side effect) just gaining endurance. If you exercise for a continuous hour every week, you should find that you start sweating less in a year or so. Maybe consider...
