Can I REALLY go full-time in an Astro/Safari?

I love my 95 Astro.  The main thing about these vehicles is that they are built on a truck chassis so the frame and suspension are very durable.   400K is normal for these vehicles if taken care of.   If you look around you can find Astros with under 100K if elderly driven.  I must admit I...

Where to camp if going full time next week

Hey fellow travelers. Going fulltime next week.  I know that some folks are now in Colorado.  When are you guys going to start filtering south?  Is Nevada a good choice to head to?  Ill be leaving from Louisiana, and cant wait to head west.  Any advice on National forests or BLM where folks are...

Fans petition GM to bring back the Astro van

I have a 95 Astro conversion van that I've turned into a camper van.  Only has 44K original miles on it.  The van is very reliable and built like a tank. I love it and plan on fulltiming in it this coming year. I doubt if GM would bring back the Astro.  Not enough profit in it.  And besides...

how many miles are to many when buying used ?

Twenty five thousand for any van with 212K is way too much.  The motor might be in good shape, but the body is probably not in good shape.  You can find a used conversion van for way less you just have to look nationwide.  I think 200k on any van that you are going to call home is way too many...

    Should i buy it

Hey Justdon, I bought a 95 Astro conversion van back in May that only had 42K on it.  I also wanted an Astro van but it took me months to find this van.  I suggest you continue to look, and look nationwide on craigslist.  Low mileage Astro vans are out there, you just have to keep looking. I...

    Typical fulltime vandweller

Hello Guys and Gals, I was wondering if there is a profile of the typical fulltime nomadic vandweller.  It seems to me that most of us are older, on social security, and lifetime travelers, or who have always wanted to exclusively travel.  I am alone and live on my pensions. A lot of the...

    Why not Conversion Van?

I have a 95 Astro van with the Gladiator conversion.  I got it with 42K and in immaculate condition.  It has the fold down rear seat, but all I did was complete the bed with a footlocker with a thermarest air mattress on top for my legs. It's pretty comfy, but is definitely a solo set up.  I put...

    Update, Retirement, etc

Hey ****, Good on you moving back to take care of your parents.  However, depending on where in La. you are moving back to I would consider Texas as a home base.  Louisiana does tax out of state pensions, but not Social Security.  You will find that the state has gone down hill since you left...

    Fogged Headlight Easy Fix

That's great advice- Thanks.  I use WD-40 on my fogged headlights.  It works great, but only lasts a few days, and fogs back up after driving through rain.

About to lose my job and About to hit the road

Everybody I have known (3 people) that have any kind of income that have Obamacare had very high deductibles, like $4000.00 or higher, so they just considered it emergency insurance in case of catastrophic ER visits.  The rest of the time they went to a Velocity care of some sort and paid the...

About to lose my job and About to hit the road

Hey Digitronical, Im sorry your losing your state job.  I do not think cashing out your pension with the state is a good idea if you have accumulated enough time to collect a pension check when you reach retirement age.  You just cannot beat a state pension (unless the state pension goes...

Interesting article on homeless in their vehicles

I totally agree.  I will be beginning my "homeless" adventure totally by choice in a couple of months.  I have a pretty good pension that should cover all of my needs if I don't go crazy with spending.  I am voluntarily leaving a paid for house to be a nomad in my van.  Why?  Because at 60 years...

    SICK OF THE MATRIX !!!!

I am so with you on your thoughts and plans.  I plan on starting to fulltime in August.  I have not gone out for a test run, but I am so anxious to get away and to see the rest of this beautiful country that I will make this lifestyle work.  I also love a good shower, however I purchased a...

Updated information on South Dakota residency

Hey Y'all, I start fulltiming in August, and plan on driving straight to South Dakota to set up residency.  There has not been a post on South Dakota residency for some time, so I wanted to ask several questions. 1. What town in South Dakota is the easiest to reach heading north into the...

Where to camp to wait out the long hot summer

I am definitely looking for peace and quiet, however I still want to be close to town for groceries and free wi-fi.  It would b great to be close to a town with a library and a coffee shop.  A walmart is also handy. Thanks for all of the great replies and ideas.  Keep them coming please

Where to camp to wait out the long hot summer

Thank you everybody for your replies. I'll be leaving from N/W Louisiana.  The video about the 70 degree lines throughout the year was very helpful.  I want to head west and i think I will head towards northern Montana and Wyoming.  While heading there I will just stay in a cheap motels until I...

Anybody else out there fulltiming in an Astro Van.  Just picked up a 95 Astro conversion van with 41K miles.  They are apparently hard to find in good shape.
