Whatcha doin' on a Friday night??

Watching updates on the local wildfires and waiting for the temperature to drop. It's been an interesting week in north county San Diego.

    Rest Area's and Truck Stops

I must be the weird one (big surprise :P). I can't sleep if a place is too quiet or still and need a fan when boondocking, but can drop off in a heartbeat at a truck or rest stop. I recently did a nonstop trip from SoCali to Louisiana in a van, tag team driving, and we stopped at many Love's...

    Clip the Chips

http://www.buzzfeed.com/kevindanger/54-uses-for-binder-clips-that-will-change-your-lif-555z I'll add: securing a reflective tarp to one side of your tent so the rising sun doesn't turn it into a sauna before 8AM, creating a tarp 'lean to' or improvised shade on the side of your van, securing...

    Jury duty?

I probably would have said something like, 'Could be, your Honor; starvation will likely affect my ability to make decisions.' At which point the judge would probably have chucked my butt in jail on contemptuous smartassery charges. :P

    Jury duty?

I've been summoned several times and always do the same thing. I tick the box marked 'financial hardship'. As none of my employers have offered regular (or any) pay to employees serving jury duty, I've always been excused. I would actually be happy to serve on a jury, but not at the expense of...

    Smallest Microwave

Thanks, Bob. I have been debating whether to include a small microwave (that can be moved from TT to TV when I drop the trailer and go roaming) in my plans. Seems worth it, even if the inverter will cost a bit more. @OP- That said, I will still be buying a Roadpro stove for cooking/warming...

    It was almost torture

I used to have an electric smoker that would do 20lbs of meat at a time... very handy when all the neighbors would come by 'to make sure there wasn't a fire' once they caught a whiff... usually just about the time the meat was done :P You can get the same response by using a marinade of picante...

    $340 monthly food stamps

Yeppers! Awhile ago, I had spaghetti sauce going in the crock inside my 5th wheel. The trailer door was open, because it was summer, and our UPS driver smelled the sauce from about 500 feet away. He wanted to know if a loaf of garlic bread would get him invited to dinner :D

    Traveling concession workers?

I'll second Bindinus on the Ren Faire circuit. Get a costume, learn to speak like Shakespeare (or talk like a pirate, most aren't all that particular), and you can land a gig that is Fri-Sun for a couple of weeks to two months and often includes camping/parking and/or hookups in the deal, esp...

Congrats, Decodancer! Who knows, I might see ya there! :D

    $340 monthly food stamps

If you aren't full timing and have electricity, I highly recommend a crock pot. Using one is so easy that it hardly qualifies as cooking, and they are very cheap to buy (less than one day of eating out). You can use very inexpensive, tough cuts of meat and have them come out falling-apart...

Cargo Van vs Pick Up with Cargo Trailer

@Twowolves- First off, thank you for your service. It is very fitting that you will soon be able to spend the rest of your life enjoying the beautiful places in the US that you spent decades of your life protecting. That said, you may want to consider the best of both worlds by adding a light...

    Decided to join the fun

Welcome, Spaceman Spiff! Can we call you Calvin? :D Pop up campers are cool if you mostly boondock in summer, but the canvas can be a big insulation headache in the winter months, and will require some work to keep leak free in heavy rain. That said, they are pretty cool and I wish you luck...

Post pics 0f your rig. :)

I have moved the pics found on the web to their own thread, 'Cool van interior pics found online (warning- huge pics)' because they were blowing out the forum and the size could be a problem for those with limited bandwidth. This could, and should, be an epic thread and great reference for...

Earthquakes - Good Reason for being MOBILE

Had I been out and about, I probably wouldn't have felt them at all. I happened to be having a 'kick back and watch movies' weekend in my 5th wheel, so I noticed. My first earthquake was a few months after my family moved to Cali when I was 16. I was asleep and woke up thinking that my alarm...

Earthquakes - Good Reason for being MOBILE

Brea and La Habra have been shaking on and off since Friday. I felt a couple of them down here in San Diego county.

    Lame break-in attempt

With pretty much all intelligent dogs, regardless of breed, training is a game. My two (rott x and pb apbt) were fully protection trained, but would happily play with the decoys when the game was over and there was no threat to me. That is as it should be with dogs of good temperament. Dogs...

HOW LONG IS A PIECE OF ROPE ??

Cooking only, it can last months. I turned off my water heater because it was eating up propane and haven't had my 10 gallon tank filled in 4 months. That said, I have a microwave, so I don't always cook on the stovetop.

    Who are the moderators?

Mods' usernames show in the 'ever stylish' pink, while admins are bold script green. For a list, go to the member list and click the 'show forum team' link at the bottom. On acronyms; DDC did a nice job but I will add one. When people talk about TTs (travel trailers), they also talk...
