Funds Before Vandwelling, or Vandwelling Before Funds [split]

I see how the distinction is drawn: We give OPINIONS but Bob gives ADVICE. This crap happens too often. Enough.

Funds Before Vandwelling, or Vandwelling Before Funds [split]

Bob, I hope you at least show some appreciation for the 'sheep' who grow your food, build and maintain your roads, provide your internet access and provide medical care when you need it. My post, which was quoted at least twice and deleted, was not in the least 'off topic'. It was, in fact...

Funds Before Vandwelling, or Vandwelling Before Funds [split]

Some people just have an aversion to work and would like to believe they can get through life without it.

    YUMA AZ?

I spend summers in the PNW, where my family all live, and the rest of the year traveling. Winters, I am usually around AZ. I grew up in a forested suburb in western WA and think trees are somewhat overrated. Nothing is as gloomy as a heavily treed camp site on a drizzly, gray day. The PNW is...

    A Roadtreak tryout

Thanks for the great report. I love my Chevy 3500 chassis, too! What a dream to drive!

    YUMA AZ?

Lots of BLM land. Shade? In the winter you don't need it, if you have solar, you don't want it.

Finally get to hit the road!

Congratulations!  Freedom beckons!  See you on the road.   :)

Money/job issue is my biggest obstacle to living the RV life

If, as you say, you have credit card debt, it would be best to pay that off before attempting the RV life. You don't want to carry any debts while living on the road and you should have at least a small emergency fund.

    Not one of ours

I've noticed that some ladies living out of cars are not very friendly. I'm supposing they are not living that way by choice so I just smile and say hello and leave it at that.

    YUMA AZ?

No Von's, either. Albertson's, Fry's, Food City, Del Sol and some non-chain markets.

    stranded/not enough cash for repairs

Provo is damned cold in winter!

    YUMA AZ?

I don't recall there being a Safeway in Yuma. But, yes, it's much nicer than Quartzsite.

    stranded/not enough cash for repairs

The plan was to keep RV dwellers out of residential neighborhoods by providing 'safe lots'  but the lots have proved to be very expensive for the city [Ballard, I think, is the only lot]--over $1750/month per vehicle.  Plans for additional lots have been scrapped, AFAIK.

    stranded/not enough cash for repairs

I accidentally gave a thanks to IGBT. Seattle is one of the most expensive places you can live. While it is true that there are safety nets, the demand right now far outweighs the supply.

Best area in US to find a used van

I agree with Cindy. The SW. Definitely avoid the NW, for rain and prices.

    stranded/not enough cash for repairs

And it always amazes me that they get stranded with a large piece of cardboard and a marking pen!  How convenient.

    Tent Camping On BLM LTVA

I agree with Bob that wind is the big problem. It will blow constantly for days at a time. Even if it leaves your tent intact, your nerves will be frazzled.

Looking for input on the Prepping mindset

OK--so all you 'hunker down at home' types have a home in which to hunker down. Many of us van-dwellers [RV dwellers] do not. Hunkering down in a vehicle of any kind during a tornado or hurricane is just plain stupid.

Dispersed camping in a class 'C'

Depends on the class C. Mine will go about anywhere. Although my Tiger has 4WD, my Born Free didn't and I boondocked in that, too. Clearance and, as has been noted, rear-end overhang can be issues but are not prohibitive. There are plenty of dispersed camp sites with access for any kind of rig.

What would you pay for a dozen eggs?

I usually spend about $3.75 and only buy eggs from free range hens. Having raised chickens for a few years, I can't bear the thought of them being in little cages their entire lives. And, yes, they taste a lot better, too.
