Looking for a mechanic to rebuild engine in a 1977 Chinook (Omaha)

Total bummer! Those are some very cool old rigs... Good to hear that you worked it out with the seller before dumping money into it. It could be a totally different deal if you could do the work on it yourself, but like VanTramp said it's a 'beyatch' to pull a van engine... and you definitely...

OK Now to plan C Ford Cutaway van

Yeah... Whoa! Wait a minute... Those bearings are way way way to clean for 300k! Have you mic'd the crank and bore? Appearances are just not adding up here. What do the shell sides look like, any varnish, numbers?? Based on those pics I'm thinking this must be a newer engine, wondering if...

CA and NY are going to make you pay to leave them!

Oh, it goes way beyond the article... California franchise tax board audits already use cell phone tower records to determine time in location. Cell phones, even when not in use, will routinely ping the towers occasionally to update location. Tax authorities also have access to automatic...

    PSA - Don't get a Transit Connect 2015

Wow, this is an interesting situation...  I wired the door chime on my '97 with a switch to shut it off, more for courtesy than stealth.  I can certainly understand the motivation to control the lighting for the same reasons.  I really like the idea of looking to an ambulance upfitter for a...

    Taurus/Ford SUV owners/buyers:

Not meaning to knock anyone who's had positive experiences... I'm happy you're happy and trouble-free.   We had a 1994 Taurus wagon for my wife back in the day when my kids were small, so she could fit all the kids and kid paraphernalia.  I can confidently state it was the worst car I've ever...

    Ford Ranger

Late 90's Ford 4.0l is not a fuel efficient motor... son's Explorer might get at best 14mpg, downhill, with a tailwind, if you coast half-way, on a good day, only if the tide is going out, and the tires are aired to the max.  The 2.3l Fords are good but under-powered.  Later 2.3l dual-plug...

OK Now to plan C Ford Cutaway van

Well, at least it looks like they kept the oil changed and used some decent oil. That exhaust leak likely sucked air and played havoc with the O2 sensor and computer. I'll bet it will run even better after you get the exhaust sealed up. Check those manifolds closely for hairline cracks. You...

    Factory holes in floorboard

Could also cover with peel-and-seal, or foil tape, and/or fill it with RTV silicone.

    AMBULANCE WIRING???

There will likely be a master power switch somewhere for the house batteries.  Sometimes the master switch is a large rotary style switch (see pics), probably mounted somewhere safe from the elements.  If you're not seeing a master switch like in the photos, it could be wired using a remote...

Great photo of a ruined sidewalk.

Cones pic alludes to the idea that we have all these safeguards and laws but criminals will still do whatever they want...  it's just the nature of the animal.  Scooter pic gave me a chuckle, seems the cement equivalent of 'you damn kids get of my lawn'.  Perhaps needs a caption, 'little...

    Loves is refusing showers.

"I would hope that businesses have the right to refuse service to anyone for no reason given. If not, where are we headed?" Yeah... quite few people (especially down south) did things exactly that way until about July 2, 1964, but then they had to start treating people equally.  To pick and...

1988 Ford econ camper van OMG!!

Yeah, I'd replace all the rubber vacuum hoses right away, everything from front to back. Mine were literally crumbling to dust on a 1997, like black chalk on your hands from touching them. Vacuum leaks will reck havoc on engine systems and fuel mileage. I had a fuel filler neck coupling hose...

    Taurus/Ford SUV owners/buyers:

I had a 1994 Taurus station wagon that was the worst car I've ever owned. Got it for cheap from a tow yard action for the wife when we had small kids. Failed transmission, alternator, radiator, water pump, headlight housing, A/C compressor, brakes, on and on and on... Never again! Hard to...

Dark Sites for Stargazing in or near SoCal?

Ok, so we're now considering Culp Valley Primitive Campground near Anza Borrego.  Ariel photo looks like it's surrounded by foothills, not far off the roadway, accessible by RV, and far enough away from buildings/civilization that it should be fairly dark...  Anyone been there?

Dark Sites for Stargazing in or near SoCal?

Thanks to everyone for some excellent suggestions and resources! I totally forgot about Anza Borrego; I'm thinking we'll look closer for a good spot there. As many of you pointed out, city lights can be seen for hundreds of miles, that's exactly why I was hoping to gain some insight as to best...

    Rambler American Grocery getter

This... is the music of my people!!! Love the patina. Sounds like the turbos are matched fairly well. Only thing I don't care for are the modern rims. I think it would look much better with some custom wide steel rims with stock hubcaps... then it could be a true sleeper.
